it's about that time of year again... communions, graduations, weddings

the gift is for a high school graduate. she's my cousin's kid (this cousin is like a sister to me). this is the first of three kids, so i'll be setting the standard for what i give the other two.

side note: the first two have already had their quinceaneras. i gave each of them $300.

how much would you give?

i already have a dollar amount in my head, i'm just wondering if it falls within a "normal" range.

and yes, i would never give anything i couldn't afford.

I've given my (close) cousin's kids $100 for HS graduation (along with other things as part of the gift - but nothing that was $$. More like a "college survival" kit - check pintrest for some ideas)

there will be a party, but party or no party i would give the gift.

i am totally a "survival kit" kind of gift giver, but since she'll be moving across the country (Penn State), i think it will be best to just give money.

but since i am a silly gift giver, i'm thinking of giving her an umbrella with money attached... "for rainy days" away at school. i also thought of including restaurant gift cards for those days that money is tight and she needs a meal.

i was planning $150, plus $50 in restaurant gift cards.

this will continue the gift giving throughout her first semester away from home and it reduces the chance of losing a physical plastic card.

I’m not sure about the idea of a restaurant gift card. I often find them kind of annoying because I always wind up paying more. She’s probably on a meal plan of some sort on campus. I don’t know what she eats and if she has a microwave or hot plate in her room, but I would make a few things ready to prep (a nice oat mixture with dried fruit, etc). That’s just me, though. Maybe an appliance like a crock pot or something with some simple recipes and a supermarket gift card. I think that goes further than a restaurant GC.

I think $100 would be nice so $150 would be very generous!

My sister is away at school for the first time and loves getting gift cards for places she likes, Panera, chipotle etc.
