Let's discuss promotions and high-ranking positions
I was thinking of other "higher-ups" I know in my company and those that get promoted often.
Do you think they have a certain attitude towards work, besides doing well? Do you think they stay out of the drama? Or suck-up?
If you made it higher or know about those who are "up there," what do you think you/they did to make it up the ladder?

From what I have seen, people in the high-ranking positions are people who have no life outside of work---stay there all hours of the day/night/weekends and have troubled marriages.
I've held management roles in the past and want no part of them anymore. Honestly, for a *slightly higher* salary, it's so not worth it, especially for the amount of stress and B.S. I had to put up with.

DH and I are good friends with several of the high-ranking (VPs) of his company.
Willingness to travel, re-locate for benefit of the company, work long hours, and be in remote locations for extended periods of time (ie the middle of Canada).
IMO, they've made tremendous sacrifices that I pray DH never tries to make -- either their marriage has suffered terribly and they're on their 'second' family (ie teenaged kids with first wife, then small children now with 2nd wife) or their children had no relationship with them and have turned to drugs, alcohol, violence.
It's hard to find the balance, but I don't want to give up our family so my DH can make more $$$.

wow, many senior managers at my firm have a work life balance and are generally happy with their jobs. everyone has stress.
My direct boss doesn't, but work is her hobby and always will be. Her DH works at the firm too. They don't have kids and they know their life is too busy with career for that.
There are senior managers here that are not happy as well.
I think you have to make informed choices when pursuing a promotion.
