* Let's start a POSITIVE post about teaching and all things related to it!
We have a lot of people who lurk on here who are considering a career change, kids who are still in college hoping to become a teacher one day, and not to mention parents!
Let's discuss why our jobs are so fabulous!

Re: * Let's start a POSITIVE post about teaching and all things related to it!
I love teaching because it is NEVER boring!
I'm an actress putting on a show each day to keep my students motivated and engaged!
I have a new set of students each year and usually a new curriculum!
I make students happy to be in school, to be in my class.
I make them feel safe when they come from homes and commuities where they do not.
I help children feel confident and increase their self worth.
They make me feel like I have a greater purpose in this world and that I chose a great profession!

Let me start off my saying I teach ESL in an elementary school. I love my students and their families and I feel like I am someone who really cares about them and helps them in a way a lot of other people don't and can't. I feel like my students learn a lot from me and I really get to know them since I have many of them for years at a time. I also love getting to have siblings since I really get to know the families in a way no one else does. I also get to learn a lot from them about different cultures and languages. My job is an amazing adventure every day and I am so lucky.

Oh my goodness...what a great post! I'm sort of a lurker myself as a once and future teacher. For those that don't know, I was an English teacher for 11 years: 4 years in jr. high and 7 years in high school. I have been home going on three years now since the birth of my 2nd DD. People ask me if I plan to return one day. My answer is always, "I'm RUNNING right back!!"
I don't even think I can describe all the things I love (and miss) about teaching. Definitely first is that I found a profession in which I could do what I LOOOVE every day...reading and writing!
After I actually started teaching, I realized that I actually loved the kids too. The energy and enthusiasm teenagers have is incredible--most people don't think so and teenagers usually get a very bad rap. Oh, it's so not warranted in most cases! They're just starting out and the possibilites are endless...so exciting!
I love being an actress for them...or a comedian...or a mentor, etc. etc.
I loved my department. The camaraderie we had was great--I realize this isn't always the case, but in my job it was actually really special.
If teaching were a 9-5 job with two weeks vacation every year, I would STILL do it!
Just writing this is almost making me tear up...sigh I miss it SO much. Every day, and I kid you not, at the end of the day when all the kids were gone, I'd look around my classroom and think, "GOD, I love my job!"

Oh and yes, zuzu...you are so right...teaching is never boring. I mean grading Regents is a bit tedious but otherwise, you have 40 minutes. If you're having a bad period or whatever, you've got the next 40 minutes to start over. The day just flies by!

I don't know if I could have put it any better than this, Erin. This is exactly how I feel about it, pretty much word for word.
I'd just add that knowing I'm making a difference in my students' lives is probably one of the most rewarding feelings in the world, and I can't believe there was ever a time in my life when I didn't know I wanted to be a teacher. (I think I'm also lucky to work in a place where the students tend to be VERY appreciative and warm, so they tell us when they appreciate us -- and they really do seem to know what we do for them and how much we care.)

Re: * Let's start a POSITIVE post about teaching and all things related to it!
I am a counselor.
What I love most about my job is having students who trust me and rely on me to help through rough patches in their life.
This to me is my favorite thing.
I love that so many students know that I have their best interest at heart and that I am rooting for them even when it feels like no one else is or cares
I love my job

It's NEVER boring.
I get to help someone, every day.
Kids are funny, even when they do stupid $h!t. (Especially when they do stupid stuff).
You have no idea how much your influence can change a child's life. I was an English major in college because of my third grade teacher and my 11th grade English teacher.
I can't imagine spending the next 20+ years doing anything else.
It's NEVER, EVER boring.

Perfectly stated. I love that, too!
I got flowers from a student 2 years ago, the card said...thank you for showing me that I'm good at math. I never was before.
