Let's talk about another VERY important topic
Why does gargamel hate the smurfs?
What does he want to do with the smurfs once he catches them? Will he eat them? Give them to his wretched cat as a plaything?
And why do villains always have cats? Shouldn't the ACLU (American Cat Liberties Union) be waging some kind of war against this vicious media attack on felines.

Did you know that the smurfs originated in a 1958 Belgian comic?

Re: Let's talk about another VERY important topic
According to Wikipedia:
Smurfs and communism Main article: The Smurfs and communism It is now argued by some that Peyo meant to spread communist ideas through smurf cartoons. [2] S.M.U.R.F. is translated by supporters of this theory as "Socialist Men Under Red Father" or "Soviet Men Under Red Father", however both of these theories disregard the fact that the Smurfs' original name is "Schtroumpfs", "Smurf" being the international translation after the fact. The Red Father in the cartoon is Papa Smurf, who wears a red hat and trousers. It is also noted that Papa Smurf might be a representation of Karl Marx because of his similar looking beard.
An analysis of the symbolism of the smurfs also can point to that theory. Smurfs live in a village with rules similar to that of a communist society including sharing of everything by everyone, absence of currency, equality (symbolized by similar clothing), everyone more or less serving a functional and necessary purpose in the community, etc.
Gargamel is said to represent capitalism with particular emphasis being made on his greediness, especially his desire to transform the smurfs into gold.

I always thought he was hungry and planned to throw them in that cauldron he was always brewing. Aren't smurfs a delicacy?
j/k - I was always under the impression he wanted their magic or something.

What does that make Smurfette?
In comic book volume 3: "The Smurfette", we learn that she was magically created from clay by Gargamel so that she would use her charms to cause jealousy and competition among the smurfs in order to cause their fall. He sent her to the smurf village, who kept her out of kindness.
Gargamel's plans didn't work well at first, as her appearance was flawed: she looked like just a male smurf but with long spikey black hair and a dress. She tried to be feminine and considerate, but was unattractive and proved to be more annoying than seductive.
Papa Smurf took pity on her when she became depressed because the other smurfs teased her about being fat, so he practiced plastic smurfery on her for several days in order to make her the beautiful and appealing Smurfette the other smurfs know today. This time, she caused almost every smurf of the village to fall in love with her. Alas for them, it did cause violence and jealousy as schemed by Gargamel, causing chaos among the smurfs who competed, fighting against each other to win Smurfette's heart.
She tried to convince Poet Smurf to open the water dam just to see the spurting water, but the dam got stuck and the village was flooded. After struggling to close the dam on his own, Papa Smurf showed his frustration towards the trouble-making nature of Smurfette, who, upset, said she decided to "return to the great sorcerer Gargamel's". The smurfs were shocked about this statement, and Smurfette was put on trial.
The smurfs, blinded by their passion towards her, declared her not guilty, as Jokey Smurf, her attorney in the trial, claimed that Papa Smurf was the one who made her attractive. Still, she felt sorry for the trouble she caused and ran away into the forest, coming back occasionally, eventually establishing herself in the village permanently after a while.
The smurfs then moderated their passion, having learned from their mistake, but they are still very much in love with her.

I think he wanted to collect them and put them on a shelf. Where he failed, I succeeded. My sister and I have many plastic smurfs including Smurfette on ice skates.
