either a diapram or The Sponge? What do you like/ not like about it?

I am at a loss. I was on the pill for years and am reluctant to do it now that I am closing in on 35. I also think I was heavier on it.

I was thinking of the IUD, but my dr just told me it caused heavier periods (already a problem since I had kids) and cramping (a problem I've had since I was 15).

We aren't ready for DH to go for a procedure yet, but these options frustrate me!

I have the Mirena IUD and it most definitely does not cause heavier periods. She may have been referring to the copper one.
I would say IUD all the way.

How about Mirena IUD? My friend got it and she works at an OBGYN, she said her period is lighter now (this one contains hormones, like the BCP, its not the old copper one) and some patients don't even get a period anymore. I am definitely going to talk to my Dr about this at my 6 week PP appt.

Your doctor is talking about the S/E of the paragard IUD (and they were true in my case). The mirena IUD does not cause those side effects.

I've never used the other forms of BC you mentioned.

I'm no help. Since I nursed, we started off using condoms and then I never went on anything after I weaned because I kept thinking we sould be TTC'ing soon. Well, here we are, not TTC'ing yet and still using condomsChat Icon

Good luck finding something that works! I remember how badly you cramped when we lived together. I hope you find something that makes you feel as normal as possible.

I have the mirena and I just got off a heavy 11 day period. It is different for everyone. Some have no periods while most have short periods. Mine seem to be getting worse as time goes on (I have had it since August 20, 2008). I am getting this POS taking out as soon as I get my referral to the gyno!

My cousin got the Mirena IUD placed after her second baby. A few months later, she found out she was FOUR MONTHS PREGNANT! Yes, she got pregnant while having the Mirena in. I think the odds of that happening are VERY super low, and I really wonder if maybe the doctor didn't place it right? But regardless, she got pregnant on it.

My BFF is a pediatrician and she used the Mirena IUD for over 3 years successfully and was able to get pregnant very quickly after having it removed.

Thanks ladies!

I am so torn. I hate the idea of using hormones after hating the pillChat Icon But the Mirena IUD sounds so much better than paragaurd.

I did some Sponge research on line and found that if you've had kids typical use is only 68% effective. Reminds me of the line in the Hugh Grant film Nine Months where he says "that's 3% completely bloody ineffective" only now it's 32% ineffectiveChat Icon

Would still love any diapraghm feedback.

Re: Let's talk birth control....does anyone use...

I will not take any hormones anymore, they never sat well with me and now being married and having a family it's not worth the risk for me. After we have another DC we too will not be ready for DH to make anything permanent so I plan to try the Paraguard. I know people who have had it and liked it. If it's awful I can always take it out. I will not to Mirena b/c it contains hormones. With all that said it the past I did have a diaphram, I wouldn't rule it out but it is annoying in the aspect of being spontaneous. Would I use one again, probably not. If you do decide to go a hormone route and don't want the Mirena, I have used the Nuvaring and like it (minus the hormones for me). Very easy to use! Good luck with your decision.

You should look into NuvaRing as well. I use it and I love it. My periods are very short and light.

Same here. I have had it for a year now and I actually stopped getting my period back in November. My Doc told me that my periods would most likely get much lighter and shorter and maybe even not get it anymore. It has heavy for the 1st month then after that it progressively got lighter and lighter until it just stopped coming. I still get spotting here and there but nothing close to an actual period. The only down side is that I keep taking pregnancy test every month because I am paranoid that I might be pregnant and not know it!!! Chat Icon So far so good. I plan to take it out some time next year to TTC #2

I got a diaphragm rx at my 6-week visit - the pill was not good for me, no matter what kind I used and I really did not want to go on any kind of hormonal birth control. So far though we've only been using condoms so I haven't tried the diaphragm yet - only because with a newborn in the house, sex has been rather spontaneous and DH has not been interested in the extra few minutes it would take to make sure it was in place, etc. Condoms are faster at the moment since we know what we're doing though I'm definitely going to try it out soon. You can put it in ahead of time and leave it in afterwards so it definitely has some advantages over condoms. Also, I tried it out at the Dr's office and it was pretty comfy so at this point, it's really just a matter of getting up the learning curve so that I can do it quickly or remembering to plan a bit and put it in ahead of time.

Re: Let's talk birth control....does anyone use...

i am seriously thinking about an IUD once my little guys are born. after this PG (which has been a complete nightmare) i dont think i can go through it again anytime soon...if ever.
BUT being that DH & I are both fairly young (we are both under 30), i dont want to do anything permanent. and we may decide down the line to try for a little girl so who knows...
I used the NuvaRing before and had no issues, but I want something a little more long term.
I'm scared of using hormones (Mirena) but then again, my dr did say that the ParaGuard may cause heavier periods...with Mirena, they completely stop after about a year for some women...
