Let's talk pet fish

I came with the CRAZY idea to get a fish for DS for Christmas.

He will be 18 months.

Thoughts?

PS.... Of course, I will be the one taking care of it.

I don't think so since you know you will be taking care of it. But I don't think he will get anything out of it either, KWIM? I would save that til he was like 4-5 so he can at least know he has a his own pet, you know?

Re: Let's talk pet fish

We have a fish and while Emma likes to look at it once every few days, she doesn't get much out of it. Even Nicholas never really bothers with him. So if you are okay with the fact that he will probably be totally uninterested and you will be taking care of it, get one!

Re: Let's talk pet fish

I think thats a great idea!!

We have a pet fish - japanese fighting fish.

DH took DD to the fish store and she picked it out. Its red and she called it Elmo. DD is 2.5 yrs but when she was much younger probably around an year or so - we had another fish and she always got a kick out of watching it on the counter. She would get so excited when she saw him swimming around up and down.

Heck - My one year old loves to watch ELMO - children are fascinated by real things - whatever it may be and its easy to take care of!

Go for it! I think its a sweet idea.

I think your DS is probably too young to really appreciate a fish. But, if you're willing to take care of it, then why not?

DH took Ryan to Pet Smart and bought him a fish. Chat Icon The fish has no name, and DH is solely responsible for cleaning the tank. Ryan doesn't really care about it yet, maybe when he's older he'll become more interested. I would wait unless you really don't mind taking care of it.

Fish are a nice, easy "starter pet"Chat Icon

Reminds me of a funny story though...I had gotten Scotty a fish when he was little...probably 3. I found the fish floating one morning, and went to work panicking about what I was going to tell him when he got home. I thought I was going to have to have the whole death talk, etc.

So, we go home, I sit down and tell him his fish went to fish heaven, blah, blah blah.

His response..."Can I have some Doritos?"
