Let's Talk Placenta

I am 14 weeks and I had a sono last night which showed a blood clot near my placenta. I have no spotting, bleeding, or other symptoms so this was a total surprise to me. The sonographer didn't seem very concerned and said it was common, especially with IVF pregnancies. Of course I am worried and wondering if anyone can shed some light. TIA!

Re: Let's Talk Placenta

Was it a sub-chorionic hematoma ??? If so, I have had 2 so far ( and was also an IVF pg. and told the same thing)....I was told with mine, that they were very small and that I would either re-absorb the blood back into my body or it would eventually work its way out...The 1st one (which was found at 9 weeks) worked its way out and I spotted- The 2nd, (noticed at 20 weeks) went away by itself...Apparently they are very common and unless they are very large ( which it does not sound like yours is, since they are not concerned) are not dangerous ...I know you said the sonographer mentioned it to you, did the OB see it in your chart as well ? In case he/she wants you to take any precautions etc....With me, I had placenta previa also, so they were being a little extra cautious Chat Icon

Thanks for your reply. I am waiting to hear from my OB this afternoon but I am quite sure it's a subchorionic hematoma based on what I researched online. I feel better hearing from you that it is probably not serious.

Re: Let's Talk Placenta

I had a blood clot as well as was told not to worry about it and if I happen to bleed a little it was the blood clot making its way out and not something I should worry about.

Re: Let's Talk Placenta

I was in a similar situation. I also went through IVF and at 11 weeks my Ob/GYN sent me to a perinatalogist b/c I am carrying twins. He noticed my placentas were deteriorating and full of clots. I never spotted or anything. He started me immed. on shots of Lovenox 2x a day. I then went for blood work which determined that I have a blood clotting disorder. I will continue to be on the shots for the rest of my preg. I will be 20 weeks tomorrow and so thankful this was found. The doctor said so many people suffer m/c b/c it is never detected or some doctors don't look for it. If the doctor didn't seem concerned then I wouldn't worry about it. Good Luck.

Re: Let's Talk Placenta

I had a subchorionic hematoma and had A LOT bright red bleeding and clots from it - it was SO SCARY the first time I saw it and actually had to go to the Emergency Room. The clot passed and I had some brown spotting for a few weeks after. My doctor was VERY reassuring and said that in his 24 years of practice, he has never seen this cause any harm to the mom or baby or miscarriage or anything like that. It still wasn't pleasant, but at least I felt a bit calmer after he said that.

Anyway, my point is that if you happen to have bright red bleeding from it, try not to be alarmed (I know, easier said than done!). But of course, you should call the doctor just to be safe!

Hope this helps!

Re: Let's Talk Placenta

Thank you for all your responses ladies. As it turns out my clot started bleeding out this morning (brown not red). I spoke to my OB last night and she warned me this might happen with a subchorionic hematoma. Good thing I was expecting it or else I would have freaked out. I will go for a sono next week to make sure baby is still OK.
