Lets talk preschoolers and talking about 911/strangers and private parts

Tonight while DS was in the bath, we were AGAIN going over who has a penis and who doesnt. So I took it as a teaching moment and told him that its his penis and only mommy and daddy, and his Dr can touch it and how if he doesnt want anyone to touch it, he can tell them no.

Which then led to other "safety" conversations. I asked him if he was ever lost in a store and couldnt find mommy, or daddy or someone he loves, what would he do? He said he would cry . So I told him, thats it OK to cry, but that he should find another mommy with her kids and tell her that he lost his mommy and that she will help him find me. We also talked about how he NEVER talks to someone he doesnt know without mommy there and never ever leaves with someone he doesnt know.

Which then led to how to call the police or fireman in an emergency and what an emergency was.

Im pretty sure I bombarded him with too much information at once, but thats besides the point.

I dont think he really understood anything I told him except for what to do if he ever cant find me.

How do you explain these things to your DC so they can understand? How do you have these conversations. Its so important, especially now that he is 3 and I think is starting to enter an age where these things (god forbid) could become very real scenarios.

What do you do? Whats the best way to explain it to them on their level?

I had the exact same conversation with DS. I think you did a good job mommy!

My mom used to tell me over and over again that if someone was to ever pick me up from school or whatever, to ask them the password.

We had a secret password and it was meant to show that it was someone I trusted (maybe a family member I don't see often, for example)

I will probably tell my kids the same.

Just keep repeating it Melissa. Repetition is key for them. Soon he will be able to repeat it to you. We started this once Teddy started camp in July, By the end of camp in August he had it down pat. Also we go through a few picture books and point out police men, fire men, Security guards who we would ask for help.

I've only done private parts so far. I told him his pee pee is private, only he can touch it, and he can never touch anyone else's pee pee either.

He should yell "no" and tell mommy/ daddy if anyone ever tries to touch his private parts.

I explained that you can only touch your pee pee when you are alone.

I think he gets it.

I forgot about strangers and 911. That's next I guess.

We've had the talk a few times in smaller and larger doses. I told her nobody can touch her privates except her and mommy and daddy, unless mommy or daddy are there (for example with the Dr.).

So the other day one of the boys in nursery school tripped and his hand landed on her chest to keep himself from falling. My girl yelled out "No, that's my privates!! Don't touch my privates!!" So the teacher explained to her what happened, and then to me when I picked her up. But I am so proud of her for protecting herself!!

I think you did great. My DS is younger and he is obsessed with my "booties" (Boobies) We constantly talk about how he can't touch mine and I can only touch his when I change his diaper or clean him in the bath. Thats all we have gotten to since he just turned 2 but he goes to touch me and he ssays "no touch mommy's booties" so I know he gets it!

I tell him his penis is very special and that no one other than money and daddy should touch his special part. I make sure he looks me in the eyes so he understands. As for the police man stuff we tell him that those people are there in case money or daddy ever get lost. Also a good Idea is in the stores that you frequent, like toys are us, or target I show Teddy where to go incase he gets lost. (Guest Services) Also I say if anybody ever tries to take him somewhere to scream as loud as he can.
