Let's talk transitioning to milk please
I know how I'm going to do it - and I'll do it once I start to run low on formula and take it from there.
I have some questions that I am curious about.
Right now - with the formula - I make 6 bottles and keep them stocked in the fridge. Do I/Can I do the same thing with milk or do I need to pour it right before he drinks it?
Did you drastically cut the amount your DC was getting? Is there a max # of ounces a child should drink in a 24hr period? Can I still give him milk to soothe him if he gets upset in the middle of the night?
Thanks for even reading my very naive questions! I hate change!

Swear, serious. Although our questions were more like "how do we transition her over & when?"
Maybe we can trade off days, you can think one day and I can relax, and then the next day the opposite...how relaxing would that be?

Sounds good to me.
I'll tell you how my ped told me to do it - and this is what I'm going to try. Whether or not it works is a whole other issue!
Day 1 - 3/4 formula 1/4 milk Day 2 - 1/2 formula 1/2 milk Day 3 - 1/4 formula 3/4 milk Day 4 - All milk

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
You can do that with the bottles, but really what's the point when you can just pour it straight from the gallon. Formula is a little different since you have to mix or use up an entire can.
If he takes a sippy, I would try the sippy route with milk first over the bottle and see if he will take to it. It will make it easier to get rid of the bottles.
Ideally they shouldn't have more than 24 ounces of milk a day. I don't think it's against the "rules" to give them milk in the middle of the night, but it's not a habit I would get into, I would just give water in the middle of the night.

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
With the milk, my pediatrician told me to give DD 16-18 oz of milk a day. When we first started, I was told to gradually add the milk in with her formula, each day i added an ounce more until it was a full 6oz. I give her milk in the morning when she wakes up, about 3pm with a snack, and then a little before bed around 7. It seems to fill her up, and she has been drinking alot more water during the day now ( i think its because she knows what to do with the sippy cup now). Now that she is on the milk, she is on reg table food so the breakfast, lunch and dinner helps to fill her..i was nervous she would be hungry but she actually goes longer stretches without eating then just on the formula..hth a little and i answered your question.

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
I EBF but still had to transition DD to whole milk. What I did was the same amount of bottles. She wasn't a huge drinker so she would have 5 oz bottles. I started by doing 4 oz. breast milk mixed with 1 oz. whole milk. Basically every couple of days I replaced another ounce with whole milk. I wasn't in a rush. Within about a week and a half, she was just on whole milk.
You can make the bottles before hand just as you did with formula. At your son's age, my ped told me 24-32 oz. You can still give him milk in the middle of the night just don't let him sleep with the bottle. Milk has natural sugars that will really do a number on his teeth.
Good luck!

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
We started adding milk an ounce at a time. It took about a week till it was all milk. My son took to it nicely. But, I have found that it is backing him up a little. I think its because he eats ALOT of dairy products, plus with all the milk. Its not terrible, but its def. something his body needs to adjust too.
Also, I still give him the same amount of ounces that he had with formula. Good luck!

This is what I did too, except that I did an oz. a week because Luka was sensative to the thickness of his formula (he was on Enfamil A.R. which is like heavy cream). It took a month and by 11.5 months he was off formula completely. I made the same amount of bottles, which were 3 8oz. bottles.
The thing with milk is that it isn't a meal like a bottle of formula would be/used to be so if they fill up on whole milk it would be like filling up on juice.

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
I started by giving him 1/2 milk 1/2 formula until I ran out of formula. I still pour all the bottles ahead of time. I think it's just easier. I do give him a few ounces in the middle of the night.

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
Thank you all so much for answering.
He really only gets 4 bottles a day now
I like to have them pre-made so I'm happy that I can do that. I can't stand when the bottles are cleaned and not filled.
All great tips on how to start him. He eats three full meals a day now so hopefully it will all go nice and smoothly!

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
I agree with Summer. And we finally stuck to CIO when we went totally to milk.
But we never did bottles. I just went right to the sippy cups and we never looked back

He doesn't wake up every night - maybe once every couple of weeks now (of course it will happen tonight since I am typing this right now! )

Re: Let's talk transitioning to milk please
I just finished the last can of formula today - so it's straight milk from now on. I've been mixing them up until now, over the past week or so. Maybe longer.
I didn't know she should be drinking milk from a sippy as opposed to the bottle. I thought the idea was to use the sippy cup for water and juice? We don't go to the ped until next month...I guess I will ask then!

DS does this also. Sleeps until 6 am most nights...but then every 3 weeks or so he gets up at 3-4 and drinks a bottle!!!! should we be giving water instead?
also...right now DS gets about 27 oz of formula a day...soon I am going to try to cut out a bottle....yuck

Well, usually you put the water and juice in the sippy so they won't depend on it out of the bottle. They don't *have* to drink the milk from a sippy, but I think it just makes it easier to break the bottle habbit early on.
