Letting babies do things they shouldnt

I know DS is only 6 months old, but is it wrong of me to get mad that people allow him to do things that I dont want him to get use to doing?

I do not know how much he is really going to understand as far as what is okay to do and not but I feel like it is still important to set good examples and teach these things.

A family member yesterday was letting DS pull off her glasses and then play with them. I wear glasses sometimes and DS grabs them all the time but I take his hand off and do not let him play with it. They are expensive. I dont want them broken and I am afraid he may get hurt (skin getting caught by the hindge).

everytime I would say dont let him do that she would say "its okay I dont care". She thinks she is spoiling him and it is okay to let him do whatever, but I feel like letting him do it now even as a baby is teaching him it is ok.

it's not wrong - you are his mother.

people don't understand that playing w/ your child to THEM is a novelty, so whtat 'they don't mind' or what they find 'cute' for 15 minutes once every few weeks, YOU are going to have to deal w/ 24/7 -

You're 100% right IMO, and I never had a problem telling anyone not to let him do something, and if they insisted on ignoring me, I'd simply pick him up and redirect him myself - I don't care.
I'm not going to let someone make MY life difficult when I'm working SO hard to teach him the 'right' way (IMO)

you are 1000% right. i dont allow DS to do certain things and when he's with others I comment if they allow it. if they say "oh but its ok" i always reply "its not ok, i dont want him doing that" and then i stop the behavior. if they dont like it - too bad (and trust me FIL and MIL don't always like it) but my view is this is MY son. you were able to raise your kids however you wanted, this is how I chose to raise my son.

thank you! I feel better! Sometimes I feel like maybe I'm being overprotective or overbaring, but I feel like people need to use common sense.

sometime I think people forget this is my son not theirs!

Re: Letting babies do things they shouldnt

I'm a big believer in letting things flow, especially with spoiling grandparents HOWEVER, the glasses thing is a NO NO for us. Both DH & I wear glasses, we don't have vision insurance - everyone was told to tell DS "NO, hands down" if he touched glasses. We explained why and everyone respected our reason. I think you should have a convo with MIL and tell her from now on that you don't want her allowing that because XYZ and reiterate it next time it happens.

yes, but it's easier said than done. i am completely in the same boat as you. i'm very particular that things be done a certain way with regard to DS, and when people don't respect my wishes, i'm VERY passive about how i correct them. i, like you, need to grow a set :) we have earned the right to make these decisions for our kids!!

I completely agree with you! And I do say something! DS now knows how to fake cough bc my mother taught him. He even coughs when you say "are you okay?" He continues and smiles. I know he doesnt know its wrong, he just thinks its a funny sound. But when he coughs for real, I'm afraid he will continue to cough and cause himself to choke Chat Icon Everybody laughs but its not funny. I cant ever ask if he's ok now. I have to say "EASY" and he stops. Thats just 1 little example. I dont let him do things that aren't appropriate though bc he just picks up on it so fast.
