Levittown Schools Question
DH and I are interested in purchasing in Levittown and from all my research I see that all the schools are great. For some reason though people that he is talking to are telling him to stay out of the area zoned for Division.
Does anyone that is from the area have any idea why? From driving around the area, it looks really nice and the high schools test scores and such seem very similar to Macarthur.
Please feel free to fm me as well. I just want to make sure we are making a good decision when it comes to schools and neighborhoods because we have a DC who will just be entering the school system this year.

Macarthur & Island Trees are good, Division I would stay away from.

I'm in Wantagh but Levittown schools. I'm zoned for Lee Road/Salk/MacArthur. Everyone I talk to told me to stay away from Division.

Levittown Schools Question
I'm a product of MacArthur. Division was always looked down upon. Why? Honestly, reflecting back, I think it was because it was more diverse. And please don't read between the lines - I literally just mean more diverse. More socioeconomic statuses and different cultures.
I don't know if there are any valid reasons. This was the case 11 years ago at least.

Not sure if this matters to you, but I think part of Levittown falls in the Grumman plume, which could affect property values. More importantly, there are increased cancer rates and health issues in areas where there are toxic plumes.

I live in the " undesirable" area that people talk about and have no idea why. The schools are pretty much the same. I think it is the diverse thing that someone spoke about. I love my sons school and neighborhood and my neighbor has had two kids in division and is very happy as well. People are ridiculous.

I have no idea why the idea that this area is inferior started. I always thought it had something to do with the rivalry between high schools. Don't hesitate to buy there.

I went to MacArthur an d know people who went to Division. Granted MacArthur had somewhat better scores but I know lots of people from Division who went to college and on to successful careers.

Wow, I just clicked the link and see that their passing rate on the Global Regents is consistently over 90%. I'm a high school teacher and can tell you that's phenomenal. It's a good indication that the kids are really doing what they're supposed to academically.
Levittown has a FABULOUS reputation when it comes to special education. But I *think* that kids zoned for MacArthur who need the most services are sent "across the border" to Division. So Division has a disproportionate number of kids with academic and social /developmental issues. This makes their test scores, college rates, etc. a little lower than MacArthur's. Wouldn't really affect your average student attending mainstream classes though.

I believe you are correct. Division has a larger special education program and other students from other school's within their district and I even think other school districts are sent there.

Levittown Schools Question
I have a friend who sent her son to Catholic school, but he has since left and now attends Division and is doing really well. A friend of a friend of mine is a teacher there and she has said that Division gets a bad rap, and that she thinks it's a much better school than people give it credit for.

Levittown Schools Question
Years ago Division was considered the "lesser" of the 3 districts. I don't think thats the case now. In fact, according to newsweek's best hs list, Division ranked higher than MacArthur.
We live in Levittown and when we were looking chose to stay within the Island Trees S.D (the taxes were lower and the district is much smaller). However, I think all 3 districts are very comparable.

I grew up in Queens too, went to public school my whole life. I guess in LI this is considered "diverse". Trust me its hilarious to me too.

I grew up in Queens too, went to public school my whole life. I guess in LI this is considered "diverse". Trust me its hilarious to me too.
Same here
I grew up in Brooklyn and went to a great HS that you had to apply to get into. Just looked them up on US News.
69% minority enrollment
45% economically disadvantaged
How's that for "diverse"?
