Leyland Cypress vs Arborvitaes

We are looking for some extra privacy in our backyard since our neighbors cut down their huge tree which blocked their second story deck...

Which would be better for a "living fence"?
I'm leaning towards the cypress b/c it is faster growing, but I don't want it to overtake our yard either...

Does this need a lot of trimming?

We have both. The Leyland Cypress is def slow growing and was more expensive.

We have Arbovitaes around the back of our house and have sun and shade. They did well and grow very fast. The only problem we have is that when we built the pond, they put so much dirt around their bottoms that the bottom half died. We are going to replace them this yr.

I like the leylands better, as they grow I think they make a more natural looking fence if that makes sence.

my father in law helped lay out our back yard (he is a landscape arch/tree guy) and he suggested the cyprus along the back of our fence for privacy...I found a nursery out in southold that grows and sells, but we havent gotten out there to check them out yet

I would hands down choose a cypress! They are beautiful and super fast growing....I'm not really a fan of arborvitaes and I have heard they can be a PITA with diseases. They are still very popular though.

Yes arborvitae can get mites. So far the ones I have are doing well. My red cedars are doing great, not one bug on them and growing amazingly. I too would chose Leylands anyday if I had the space to let them grow large and if I had more sun.
