LI church gets $3M lottery from member
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 2:38 PM EDT, August 27, 2008
A Port Jefferson pastor says one of his congregants donated a lottery ticket to his church just after scratching it off and realizing it was worth $3 million.
Pastor Bertrand Crabbe (Crab) of the True North Community Church of Port Jefferson says the donor, who asked to remain anonymous, said, "This was why God put the ticket in his hands."
A state lottery official said Wednesday that the church will get at least $102,225 a year through the year 2028. The amount could be higher if withheld taxes are refunded because of the church's nonprofit status.
Crabbe says the independent Christian church will give away the first year's proceeds to other charities.
--------------------------------
Wow, imagine winning $3mil, then just dropping it in the collection plate? Sounds like the church is going to do a good job of distributing the wealth, though.

Hey now, I thought gambling was against Christian doctrines? So, technically they are benefitting from someone's sin.
I think the pastor should return this ticket indignantly!!!

It's probably allowed if it benefits them.

Re: LI church gets $3M lottery from member
I actually have met this pastor and have family members who attend the church (although, I myself am not affiliated). If there really was a church that this should happen too - this is the one. While I am not of the same beliefs, the pastor and those who work in this church are really very good people who I have always seen do "the right thing". I am sure that there was a lot of thought put into how to accept this gift and I am sure it will go right back out to those who need it most.

Yes, I did hear about this also. I have also heard that this is a really awesome church to go to - I know a few people to love it there!
Congrats to them, they will be able to use that gift ten-fold
p.s. Things happen for a reason I believe

A close friend & her DH go to this church. She told me about this story not too long ago. The pastor, from the times she has spoken of his, seems to be a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. Congrats to them !

This is my church..
I have known Pastor Bert since I was 12 yrs old, and you couldn't be more on the money with what you wrote.
My DS was dedicated here, and I cant begin to tell you how one service changed many lives in our extended family.
He is an amazing Pastor, dedicated youth leader, and a wonderful friend!!!
Im so happy for them!!!

Re: LI church gets $3M lottery from member
It's probably allowed b/c it's a donation, it's not that they played (or maybe they did...)
If someone did give it, wow, what a generous person. I can see giving SOME Of it, but ALL of it? God bless that person. DH said the person who won wants to remain anon b/c their family would not be happy...

Re: LI church gets $3M lottery from member
I've been to this church from time to time over the years and it's wonderful- they're true, kind people who definitely deserve it. They do so much for the community and help support soup kitchens and the food pantry at the Lighthouse Mission in Patchogue.
I think it's sad that people are so quick to question the motives behind accepting the donation. All churches accept donations! They are non-denominational, so how do you know where they stand on the lottery? What does it matter- they helped people when they had hardly any money, and now they'll help more. I think that's wonderful.
