ITA about the school - they should held responsible here
I agree about the school part.
And yes, bullying has been around forever but at least before if you were bullied, it usually ended when the school bell rang. Now with fb and all these other social networking sites, these kids cannot escape it. It really is sad and I also think kids really have no need for a fb page. But I'm 'old school' like that

Not necessarily... i had bullies call my house when i was younger... it didnt end when the bell rang

The extent of the bullying is much WORSE with social media involved. No one can argue that. Look at that poor kid that took his own life because someone video taped him having a sexual encounter with another man, and then blasted it all over the internet.

Point taken (that's why I said usually). But it's still a lot worse with the social media IMO. Pretty much 24-7.

I agree that another means to bully makes it easier and more public which can definitely make things worse...

I'll teach my kids to do everything they can to avoid physical fighting, however if that fails and they are attacked, my kids will fight back to get away. They will also know that it is okay to hit to get away if you are trapped.. My DD is 4 and already knows this.
However, never would I setup a fight, cheer on a fight, or lay my hands on a kid or teach my child that they can ever strike first.
That said, this woman sounds like trash. As a parent, you have many more options than a 12 year old. You don't need to resort to this nonesense.

FYI for those placing blame on the school-- where schools are concerned there are legal issues/ramifications for getting involved with internet bullying/FB issues as you can never truly know who the sent the message bc of hacking , fake profiles etc. so accusing students of something and punishing them for something that happened over the internet can lead to a lot of problems for the school officials (think big law suits).
Schools usually recommend the parent contact the police with internet issues.

I see where the mom was coming from- but her execution was off.
If my kid was being cyber bullied- and the school wouldn't do anything- I would teach her to defend herself. I think it is better to shift the bullying from online to real life. If its in real life- you have a confrontation and hopefully- it will all end.
And if my kid was threatened with getting jumped, you bet I would have my army husband teach her what she needs to know about fighting.
That being said- I would NEVER drive her to fight another kid or lay my hands on another child.
