Lice. I am about to be committed to a psychiatric ward. Did these home remedies work for anyone?
Let's just start by saying we have tried Rid, Nix, prescription meds, combed for hours, picked out hundreds of nits, did 47 loads of laundry, had professional cleaning people come, and yet a month later, we are still itching and scratching our heads (even though we no longer see live bugs).
Has anyone had any success with:
-the olive oil/mayo treatment? -cetaphil or listerine treatment? -killing lice with hot blow dryer or flatiron?
I don't even see any nits anymore on my DD (or on me) but we are still itchy and I am paranoid. Please help!! If I miss any more days of work (she can't be at daycare because of this) I will be fired!

i work in a school and several people have tried the listerine and have seen success. From what I heard, you need to use the original amber colored listerine, use the whole bottle on her head and wear a shower cap to bed. wash it out in the morning. Also, there is a hair product line called fairytails that sells stuff that is supposed to be preventative. Another thing is to put tea tree oil in your shampoo-i think just a tablespoon or so in the bottle of shampoo is supposed to do the trick-this is from someone that taught on a commune where things like lice are spread very easily-everyone used this oil and no one got lice. I think you can get it in health food stores. Good luck!!
one more thing, is to keep products (like gel and hairspray) in your hair and braid it or keep it in a ponytail. Also, dyed hair is less suseptible.

Rubbing alcohol. Dirty hair, pony tails. I got it from my neice years ago. I was a lunatic. Plastic bags over pillows, all new hair brushes. Good luck.

Not sure about remedies, but what are you combing out with? The ones that come with those kits are junk is what the Fairy Licemothers people told me at the All Kids Fair. There is a comb they sell at BRU, it's metal and about $15. I bought one and we periodically comb with it as a preventative measure. It's supposed to be the best thing for getting the nits out.

I heard garlic oil works. You can buy it in the health food store. I was exposed to lice recently (a co-worker's kids had them) and luckily I didn't get them, but boy, was I scared. Another co-worker told me to rub garlic oil on my scalp and on my dd's scalp. I didn't do it because I clearly didn't get them, but it couldn't hurt to try.

I ordered a special comb online - it may be the one you mentioned because it was recommended by professional nitpickers - it's actually a really good comb. I just don't understand, I'm itchy and I immediately have my husband check the area with a huge magnifying glass and flashlight and NOTHING. I guess they could be hiding but after 3 hours per night of combing, 3 nights in a row, you would think they would come out!

They very well may be gone then. You are probably just itchy with the changing seasons. That happens to me every single year!

It could be psychological at this point. I know every time I see a bed bug commercial I start to itch.

Try the fairy tales spray- put that in, comb and you will be fine- takes out all the eggs
is it possible from all these treatments that your scalp is now dry and that's why you are itchy?

When I lived in Argentina many many years ago....lice was EVERYWHERE!!!!!! There was no escaping it. What my mom used to do to me and my brother....she drenched my hair in white vinegar and then combed it with the lice comb. She put my hair in a bun and then wrapped a plastic bag over my head. We also did the is with oil. To this day....I hate the smell of vinegar!!!! Good luck!

They also make Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. They sell it at Vitamin stores as well as Whole Foods etc. I used to use it during "lice season" at school. It is probably partly mental at this point. As soon as a child in my class had lice, I began itching uncontrollably.

Treat with the shampoo.....
Then sleep with baby oil on the head everynight.....
Wash out and run through with the lice comb...
Lice can only live a few days off of the body. So im really going to assume that they are no longer in your house....

I just feel like I missed one nit and now it hatched and I have live ones on me again and just can't find them. I think the nits are more easy to see than the lice!

Try tea tree oil in your hair as a natural deterrent.

They are....
And...the nymphs are tiny...
But...
They dont lay eggs...
So if you treat yourself you'll be fine. The shampoo only kills the lice not necessarily the eggs. So if you only have nymphs then you're good b/c they cant lay eggs. (They have to be 12 days old to mature....
