Life in the country for the big city girl
So I'm up at 3 am this morning with my DD who refuses to sleep this week and my motion light goes on outside the house so I check to see what's out there and see what I think is the world's biggest RAT creeping up to the side of my house AAAAAH (picture me here jumping out of my skin). I am in no way exaggerating when I tell you that it was the size of my very fat housecat. Fastforward to me having to wake up DH b/c I'm freaking out that it's headed into our basement somehow who comes down to inform my naive city girl self that it is in fact a harmless opossum that is actually good for the yard and eating the bugs.
What would you do if you saw this running toward your house at 3 am in the morning in the dark.... Image Attachment(s):

OMG, I would have DIED. I'd probably still be climbing the walls, right now if it had happened to me.
Although, I have to say, I see them by me all the time, and I live in Queens. They DEFINITELY look like rats. You have my sympathies.

You must have been freaking out. I have actually went up to one and went,"pss, pss, pss" thinking it was a cat. I was then greeted by two beady little eyes before it waddled away. Ugh!

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
Possums are scary f*cks. Growing up I had a possum that liked to climb the tree outside my bedroom. It used to just stare at me untill I closed the drapes.

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
I grew up in the country and then moved to the big city. I honestly think I prefer possums, skunks and bats to a lot of the people in NYC!!

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
Years ago when I lived alone , I was coming home from work one night and there was a possum in my window box right next to my front door just looking at me. Scared the crap out of me, I had to get the super to scare it away because I was so freaked out

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
We have one that visits our backyard regularly - we know when he's there because he sets off the motion detector, he's that big!
The first time I saw his I DID freak tho...

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
That does look like a big rat! My mom used to have a house in PA and I uaed to sit on the back deck, let the light go off and stare at the stars. Until I realized there are bears up there!! Then I used to leave a door open for a quick entrance!! I love the country but the animals still scare me!

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
O M G!!!
I too had that experience. I was a city girl, and moved to the country.
One had gotten into my house through the garage and was in the fireplace. It snarled at me, and you should've seen its teeth!!
I had no idea what it was!!!!
I ran out the door.
It scrammed and bored a hole through the screen door to get out.

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
Possums run rampid in Staten Island. Worse part is- they are nocturnal. Be careful when you take your trash out in the morning. They like to hide out in trash cans & "play" dead.

Re: Life in the country for the big city girl
Yeah they're nasty looking. They don't smell great when they get stuck under your deck and die either $380 later the exterminator took him away, apparantly we have a few of them under the deck, he cut the beam so another one wouldn't get stuck! The smell eewwww it was gross.
