Re: Life insurance
Look into the insurance company you already use for your car or auto insurance.
As far as finding an agent, ask around. In the insurance business, the turn around is so high you want to make sure you get an agent that is knowledgable, competent and has been in the business for a while. The best way to find an agent like that is through referrals from friends.
If you don't have any luck with that, fm and I can give you some referrals. Also, feel free to Fm if you have any questions whatsoever! I will be more then happy to help. I'm in the business but don't really get into the insurance selling side.

Re: Life insurance
I have mine with State Farm. I got it when I was in my early 20s so it is really cheap. I really don't think it matters which company you use as long as you choose your policy wisely. I just read an article yesterday that said that you should have five times your earnings, plus the total amount of your household debt and enough to cover college tuition for your children. It also said that probably the best policy to buy at first is a term policy (because it is cheaper) but to try to get a policy that can be converted to whole life later if you want.
Here is the link to the article. It was actually about the top 10 financial mistakes new parents make: http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/CollegeandFamily/Raisekids/P37244.asp?GT1=7588

Comapnies do matter. Choose a company that has the financial strength to pay out if a death does occur. Also make sure the rates are guaranteed for that time period if it's a term policy. ALso if you're looking to convert in the long run, then make sure it's convertible. FM me if you have any further questions. Honestly shopping around for life insurance is kinda silly. Most rates in NYS are a few dollars off. The rating is based on a wide range of things. Age, health, family history and so on.
