Link to a film about pregnancy in the US
My mom who is an OB nurse, but very involved in academia (she has a masters as a clinical nurse specialist and is completing her Doctorate from Columbia next semester.. just addding that because that is why she gets these emails and gets involved in these discussion groups) just passed this link onto me. It was at the bottom of a long email from Nurses all over the US and all of thier comments were really interesting. There is a documentary coming to theatres this January called the bussiness of being born.
Warning it is very pro natural childbirth and against the trends of L&D in the US today. I didn't post this to offend or start contreversy but I thought that some people on here would be interested.
One quote on that email was from a nurse in Buffalo...
"At one hospital, here in the valley, the nurses put on the top of every new admit to L&D the acronym PPED, pit, pop, epidural, delivery. The idea is to get them delivered ASAP, the rooms are needed. It is about the business of being born, hardly the way women want to birth and we want to do nursing care."
SO here is the link to the movie trailer

Very interesting. I know when I was in labor the nurses were so surprised that I didn't need pitocin. However, I don't think I could have done it without an epi. I had back labor and my contractions were coming so fast, it was excruciating. I admire anyone who can do it naturally, but I'm all for the drugs.

I don't nessecarily think the film is about no drugs as much as it the state of L&D and the time schedule and judgements that are made in the delivery room.

No, I agree, but the women showed in the trailer appeared to be having natural births. I also think decisions made in L&D rooms (especially C-sections) are due mostly to the high rate of medical malpractice suits and the high cost of insurance for doctors.

True true. It is sad that doctors are forced to practice in such ways because of the litigious society we live in. When I lived in PA and MANY of the doctors were simply leaving because the malpractice insurance was unbelievable there. One of the highest rates in the country.

I haven't watched the film but when I gave birth to my dd, I was told that if I wasn't using staff doctors, I would have probably been made to have a C-section because I wasn't moving along as fast as most doctors like. I was admitted at midnight and gave birth at 5:41pm the next day. I was in labor less then 24 hours and this was seen as not progressing fast enough.
