LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
I promise that I will do a search but I was wondering if anyone was around to answer this:
I have to call LIPA and Keyspan tomorrow to start service. I am going to check out their websites but wanted to see what everyone here was doing in terms of billing and plans. I think I like the Balanced Billing with LIPA - not sure if Keyspan offers that but I'll go look it up. In the meanwhile, what does everyone do and/or suggest. Our home is gas heat.
Thanks!

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
Keyspan definitely offers balanced billing, I have it with them and LIPA.
IMO, I wouldn't do it any other way. I don't like surprises. I like to pay the same amount every month. sometimes I get a refund at the end of the year, sometimes I end up owing, but it's never been too much.

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
I have balanced billing for LIPA but not for Keyspan. We didnt do Keyspan because during the warmer months we end up paying like $50-$75 and if we had the balanced billing it would be more than that a month. During the winter months our bills are like $300
Check with them...I dont think you can do the balanced billing until you have beena customer for a few months. You dont want to do balanced billing based on the previous owners....you dont know what their habits are....KWIM??

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
Wow - this is very helpful. Sounds like balance billing is the way to go but I need to find out when I can qualify for it. I agree - I don't want to be billed based on the previous owner's usage. Can I switch at any time to balance billing?

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
I think anytime after the initial period you can switch.
We have had gas heat in the house for almost 4 years and they are still trying to get me to switch!!

when I first moved in to my apt., my bills were really low b/c the former tenant was never home. it caught up with me after a while though, it adjusted.

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
For some reason LIPA urged us to not do balanced billing until the first year was up. I dont remember why.

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
Balanced billing all the way - it makes it so much easier to budget. Especially with how expensive energy costs are these days.

This is what I don't like/don't understand about the balanced billing. I don't think it's any better to get a bill for 1,000 at the end of the year to cover all of the other month's overages instead of paying an extra 100.00 a month every month to pay the REAL price..

I can't speak for anyone else, but anytime that I have owed $ to either company, it's been less than $100 at the end of the year.
ETA: just want to add that they adjust your bills throughout the year to your use. so if you do owe at the end of the year, it is not a huge amount.

Re: LIPA & Keyspan Billing Questions
Im in the minority I guess becauseI have had such issues with the balanced billling- last year at the end of the yr I had to pay around 500$ to make up for the overages - and this is a 2 bed co op , so now Ive switched to regular billing because that was too much but this year I had to pay 328$ for the month of june for the Ac but at least I know what its for.

I think because they need to get an idea of what your range is. How much you use in the winter and summer months so they can get an idea of how to budget you.
