LIPA, Con Edison plan wind farm off the Rockaways
http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-liwind235854268sep23,0,7429578.story
BY MARK HARRINGTON | [email protected] September 23, 2008
A year after nixing an offshore wind farm near Jones Beach, the Long Island Power Authority will explore a new, larger proposal with Con Edison for a field of up to 100 turbines off the coast of Queens.
LIPA chief executive Kevin Law today is expected to announce the formation of a working group with Con Ed to study the feasibility of a "significant" wind farm, possibly 10 miles off the Rockaways. If the two utilities can agree on a plan, they will draw up a request for proposals, perhaps early next year.
Law emphasized that any plan would have to be economically feasible. LIPA's financial picture already includes tentative plans to overhaul old fossil-fuel plants and take on the state's largest solar energy project, on top of a $6.6 billion debtload.

Hopefully it's a financially viable solution, and they can start building it (and hopefully it doesn't run way over budget... )

they have been trying to do this in SI for years (on the old landfill)
guess who is against it...
the environmental groups- b/c 1.5 birds will die for every windmill

Where did that figure come from? Birds migrate twice a year, how can they say that only 1.5 birds will die as a result? I would think it would be a lot more than that.
At least, the plans for Jones Beach had different information, the numbers were higher than that. Jones Beach has protected areas for certain migratory endangered birds, so that was a bigger issue there for the people concerned about how the windmills will affect the nature around it.
The biggest problem I had with the Jones Beach plan was how the estimate for the initial outlay kept growing and growing, the more time went on.
Hopefully this plan will be more beneficial for everything and everyone. There's always an outcry, no matter what you do. Not a lot of people want to look at their oceanfront view and see windmills, even if they are miles and miles offshore.

.
that number is PER windmill - not the total
after a while the birds learn not to fly into them
this is just what my uncle told me- he lives close to Great Kills

Re: LIPA, Con Edison plan wind farm off the Rockaways
They've observed current windmills in other areas, and apparently, most birds are smarter than some people think. Very few, if any, birds fly into windmills, based on actual numbers. I think more birds fly into home windows (DW had several fly into windows of her house growing up), so I guess we shouldn't allow any residential homes to be built, since the average bird death is probably close to 1.5 per house....

Re: LIPA, Con Edison plan wind farm off the Rockaways
DH and I were driving home from my MIL's house in western NY and saw a wind farm from the Thurway. It was so cool! Dh almost drove into the car in front of us since he was staring at the wind farm
