LIPA rate information - numbers broken down
I set up my LIPA service today and I asked a few questions on how much their rates are.
I figured people would like to know and compare so I wrote them down.
These figures are based on a house in Levittown, NY.
Basic Service Charge: 18cents a day (of the billing period)
Fuel Surcharge: .06769 per KWH
Electric Rates:
1st 500 KWH: .19259 per KWH (.1249 + .06769 fuel surcharge)
501+ KWH (Summertime June 1st thru Sept 30th): .20439 per KWH (.1367 + .06769 fuel surcharge) (All other months): .16549 per KWH
NY Local and Sales tax is extra
I thought these rates with the fuel surcharge would be much higher based on everyone's complaining about LIPA. It really isn't that bad.
Right now for ConEd in NYC... I am paying 19 cents a KWH plus some "adjustment factor" of an extra 4 cents a KWH. Not sure what that is.
I guess the people here that have insanely high LIPA bills must use a lot of electric (maybe from stuff like a Pool).

Re: LIPA rate information - numbers broken down
I think they added a flat surcharge ($35 for fuel?) to everyone's bill the past month or so. I'm not 100% sure, DH handles the bills, but I seem to remember him talking (ranting) about it.

She said the fuel surcharge changes every month. The $35 buks that seems flat was probably calculated per KWH.
$35 buks would equal about 517 KWHs which seems very possible.

That makes sense. Our bill has gone up a lot now that I'm home all the time.

Thats what happened to us and our LIPA bill doubled.

Re: LIPA rate information - numbers broken down
Our LIPA bill went up a bit too. Nobody is home during the day, and the weekends my house gets alot of sunlight so I don't need to turn on lights till sundown. I have no clue why the bill is always alot!

The only way to tell why your bill is so much is to look at how many KWHs you used that month.
If you have an appliance or a piece of electronics that you think is eating up all the electric... try using one of these to get a reading.
Electric KWH Meter

Re: LIPA rate information - numbers broken down
Let me tell you I almost fell off the couch when I got my LIPA bill and the excess fuel charge was almost 150.00 , I called them, and they said it was right, then in the next bill I noticed they adjusted our bill. What a relief!!! We are only 2 people... we do not use that much electric, our bill was almost 500.00! This bill was a lot less, so it goes to show you to always question things with these companies. thanks for the rate info.

Re: LIPA rate information - numbers broken down
the LIPA fuel surcharge is outrageous - our bill was only 146.00 - not too bad rigth - but when you flip it over and look at the breakdwon 48.00 was a fuel surcharge---
that is ridiculous - a third of our bill
and i dont get the fuel surcharge this - gas has gotten alot cheaper lateyly!
