LIPGLOSS, please don't read. re: stitches.
I work with this woman...she's a bit of an attention whore. She is a glory hound. She always has a story DIRECTLY related to whatever you say that puts the spotlight and focus ON her...my pregnancy is NO different. People actually forget what they are really talking about with her. [example: she went to PR or something in Feb. a month later, she is still telling EVERYONE she talks to on the phone about it...and I get to hear all about it as she's by my office..she also yells on the phone.]
For the most part, I ignore her...but she said something to me that just makes me wonder [in horror]...
When I had DD, I had a small episiotomy and still ripped a tiny bit. The dr. said I needed ONE stitch...to stabilize both the cut he made AND the rip...granted, I was afraid to ever look down there, so I have no clue what it looked like.
Anyway, for some reason she shared with me that with one of her deliveries, she ripped a lot [i'm like, OK17?!?! why are you telling me this??? we wern't even talking about this stuff!] and needed 17 stitches...17?!?! holy moly! if my cut AND rip needed 1, how freaking much did the woman rip to need 17?

It sounds like she "enhanced" the story for wow factor, don't even give it a second thought.

I was thinking the same thing.
I had a nice episiotomy since dd was delivered with forceps, I had like 6 stitches. Where in the hell would 17 stitches even go, the peri area isn't even that big.

I had a girl friend of mine who had this really big baby...she didnt want an episiotomy and wound up tearing ALOT..you see the thing appears to be that when you tear you dont tear neatly down towards your perinum..she tore up across both sides of her labia and wound up with a TON of stitches and need plastic surgery later on to correct it!!!!!

I wouldn't worry. I didn't tear, I only had an episiotomy, but DH said there were alot of stitches. It was only sore for about a week. I started riding my bike again after one week with no pain.

I had an episiotomy and I tore quite a bit. It took a long time to stitch me up but I never asked how many stitches never cared to know. I did peek down there a few days later and it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined.

I had an episitomity too but did not rip and I was so uncomfortable while the Dr. was stiching and I asked how many stiches she was putting in and she said she never counts so I have no idea but I know it was not 1.

Re: LIPGLOSS, please don't read. re: stitches.
17 stitches doesn't seem impossible to me either. I also had a 4th degree tear, and it took them a loooong time post delivery to sew me back together.
The good news though is that I didn't feel any of it (yay for epis) and there was no long term consequence.
