LIRR Derailment -- I have 9am mtg in the city tomorrow -- should I make other plans?

Totally selfish post, considering so many people were evacuated from the LIRR tonight --
LIRR Train Derailment -Link to Newsday
and I usually WAH but tomorrow I have a day full of meetings on the west side -- starting at 9am. Should I drive in instead? Am I crazy or just paranoid I won't make my meeting?
I'm south shore Suffolk, so I normally take Montauk branch.

Customers should anticipate train cancellations and delays during the AM Peak due to last night's derailment inside one of the East River tunnels. Amtrak personnel will be working throughout the night into the morning to assess the damage and make repairs. Please check our website for updates.

I would make other plans.

I left from Mineola this morning. I got in usual time. I had to switch at Jamaica and stand into Penn..

I got DH up early so that he could leave plenty of time for work, since the news was saying how bad the commute would be, including no trains going into Penn. I called him at 7:40 to see how things were going, expecting it to be bad. He had already left Jamaica and was heading into Penn!

How do derailments like that happen?
I never understood it.
Does the train just slip off the track?
Is it due to a problem with the track?
Or human error?

off topic, has the LIRR stopped sending email updates for this occurrence? I am supposed to get them, but I haven't gotten any in a few days.

I would drive or just take an earlier train. If you need to be somewhere at 9am then I would aim to be at Penn by 8am.

This morning I took my normal 7:48a from Wantagh and the train was packed and said it was going to Penn but then once we were approaching Jamaica they canceled our train. We had to get out at Jamaica and get on a train to Penn. I got on a train to Hunters Point because I can take the 7 train to my job.

The 7:48a train will get me in the door to my office by 8:55a but this morning I was here at 9:20a. So it wasn't too bad of a delay but still a PIA.

Thanks. I took an earlier train and expected to be delayed or canceled as we approached Jamaica but I made it in plenty of time for my meeting. Even finished up early so I could come home on an earlier train. I'm already headed to Babylon.
