Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
Oh this would be awesome! But I could see them filling up real fast!
Yesterday on my commute home there was this huge D-Bag who thought he was so funny, so clever and the best thing since sliced bread! He was being so loud and obnoxious I wanted to throw something at him!

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
Trying to find the article about the LIRR. I found these on the mta site, though.
http://www.mta.info/mnr/html/quiet_car.htm?print=1
Quiet Cars Come to Port Jervis & Pascack Valley Lines June 1
Metro-North is partnering with NJ TRANSIT (NJT) to bring Quiet Cars to Port Jervis (PJL) and Pascack Valley Line (PVL) peak-period trains beginning Wednesday, June 1.
Named "First In, Last Out," the first car on all AM Peak trains arriving in Hoboken Terminal will be a "Quiet Car"; while the last car of PM Peak trains departing Hoboken Terminal will have a quiet environment.
Quiet cars are being alternated between morning and evening peak period trains because of the shorter consists on trains using Hoboken Terminal.
On Quiet Commute cars customers would refrain from using cell phones and disable the sound feature on pagers, games, computers and other electronic devices. Conversations should be conducted in subdued voices, and headphone devices should be used at a volume that cannot be heard by other passengers.
On an "as-needed" basis, conductors will hand out specially designed Quiet Commute business cards that explain the program.
Metro-North will evaluate reaction to this program over a three-month period to determine how a "Quiet Car" program may be expanded to our East of Hudson service (Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines) in the near future.
Please look for additional information on this program at www.njtransit.com

MTA Metro-North to Begin Quiet Car Pilot Program on the Hudson and Harlem Lines
Metro-North is launching a Quiet Car pilot program on select peak hour trains on the Hudson and Harlem lines beginning Monday, October 17.
The LAST car on certain AM peak trains and the FIRST car on certain PM peak trains will be set aside for customers who would like an environment free of cell phones, loud conversations and all manner of beeps and buzzes. These trains will be designated by a capital Q in the timetable.
The program will be voluntary in nature with customers self-monitoring. However conductors will issue "shh" cards to customers who are non-compliant.
In addition, announcements will be made informing and reminding customers of the location of the Quiet Car and its restrictions. The use of electronic devices in the Quiet Car will be prohibited including cell phones, iPods, DVD players, laptops, etc. unless the device can be used in a manner that does not create any noise. If headphones are used, they must be at a volume that cannot be heard by others.
Customers can converse in the Quiet Car but they must use subdued voices.
Metro-North will evaluate customer reaction to the pilot program and decide whether to expand it. A similar pilot last summer on the West-of-Hudson's Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines conducted in conjunction with NJTRANSIT was well received and was recently expanded to all peak trains.

You should have thrown it lol.
I've only been commting on the LIRR for a few months but I find this type of behavior happens more often than not...what is wrong with people? Fine, talk, but seriously just bring it down to a reasonable volume or zip it.

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
We have them here on Virgin Trains, they don't work. People still listen to their music loud on their headphones, people still bring their kids, and people still talk on their phones. The conductors barely police them, and its a miserable experience. Now, first class cars...thats worth the money. I love Virgin First Class trains.

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
They have them on Amtrack. Generally they work until everyone starts yelling "This is the quiet car!" to the person who asks the guy next to him a question, the woman sneaking a call on their cell, or someone coughing/snoring.

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
We started doing this in Boston at the beginning of the year and it actually worked out pretty well that they just implemented it on all lines starting in June. You would be surprised. People talk loud now because there is nowhere posted that they shouldn't.

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
Honestly I wish they would make all trains quiet cars during peak times. Most times, like now people are quiet and if they are not I will be the 1st person to ask them to keep it down. I'm not saying ban cell phones or talking but be polite enough not too yell. I was reprimanded once bc I was talking too loud on my cell when I first started commuting and needless to say I've neveer had to be reminded again.

The Long Island Rail Road plans to test a "quiet car" on some trains this fall, giving customers a tranquil refuge from annoying ring tones, loud cell phone conversations and assorted other auditory nuisances.
The details are "still in the planning stage," and the LIRR has not decided when and on what trains the quiet cars will be rolled out, LIRR spokesman Sam Zambuto said Friday.

The agency will decide on whether to keep and expand quiet cars depending on the success of the pilot program.
The LIRR is following the lead of other rail providers, including Amtrak and sister MTA railroad Metro-North, in providing the quiet cars. Earlier this week, Metro-North announced that it is expanding its program, now in effect on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines, to its Hudson and Harlem lines.
Like Metro-North's quiet-car policy, the LIRR's would be "self-enforced," Zambuto said.
For years, commuters have called for the LIRR to take action against obnoxious chatterboxes. Railroad officials previously said it would be difficult to enforce a quiet-car policy.
In a November letter to one commuter, the LIRR said it was tough enough, as is, for riders to find a seat during rush hour.
"Asking customers to find the 'right' car for cell phone use on a crowded train would present even greater challenges," the letter said.
LIRR officials also previously said that disputes arising from violation of quiet-car rules could cause train delays.
But after seeing other railroads, like Metro-North, have success, Zambuto said the LIRR is ready to give quiet cars a shot.
"We don't have any preconceptions about it," he said. "We want to know what customers think about it."
The LIRR Commuter Council stands ready to offer its suggestions on how to make the plan work, said council chairman Mark Epstein, of Melville.
"We appreciate that the railroad has heard and wants to respond to riders' complaints about the volume of noise during their daily commute," Epstein said.
I seriously, I want to duct tape peoples faces on that train....STFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Re: LIRR plans on testing out 'quiet cars'
This sounds like a dream. I am hopeful it works.
There is one group of ladies on my train that are so loud - I switch morning cars depending on where they get on b/c I just can't in the morning. Every once in a while I end up in the same car as them in the evening and OMG they are even worse...you can hear them clear as day on the opposite end of the car. I don't expect to hear pin drops but if I can hear four ladies talking over everyone else at the far end of an evening train, they are way too freaking loud!
