LIRR riders that live in: Greenlawn/ NP/ ENPT/ Commack/ Smithtown
Greenlawn East Northport Northport Commack Smithtown
Depending on what town you live in Can you please tell me: 1. what line you take (to me it looks like Huntington/ Port Jeff but I could be wrong) 2. What station you find to work out the best? 3. Where do you park? is it free or you need to pay?
This might be premature for me but we are looking to buy in all those towns and if something comes up the LIRR commute would def be a factor so I would like to know ahead of time what my options are.
Thanks! I know its a loaded question!

The people I know who commute from Greenlawn, E Northport and Northport usually drive into Huntington and take the train from there (they are more frequent).
To park at Huntington Station - it's very reasonable, I think it's still under $50 a year!

I used to commute from Huntington. Its an hour.
I parked at Cold Spring Harbor though, it was like $10 a year but you had to prove residency at Town Hall.

I live in Melville and commute from Huntington. Parking permit is $50 a year. You can always get a spot. Huntington has a lot of express trains. Personally, I wouldn't go any further out than Huntington. As it is, the commute sux and I couldn't imagine dealing w/ even a minute longer.

Haha Jenn, ITA! I have a 40 minute commute now and the 20 minutes make a HUGE different, its so silly but it really does.

haha it is so true! I used to work in the city and hated every minute of my commute..worked on york and 68th and literally complained everyday.
But I am asking for my DH who doesnt mind it at all. Hes been doing i for yrs and never complains. He was saying bc his hrs are pretty predicable. 99% of the time he takes the same am and pm train, if we moved to say smithtown he would just take the train in and out of there. i was trying to see what his best option was.
So confusing!

We live in East Northport, but in the Commack SD, so we're south, near Jericho. DH has been taking the train from Huntington for over 10 years. It takes 13 minutes to get there in the morning and about the same in the eve. He's one to never complain, either. But I've done it and it's not bad at all. I wouldn't go any farther out.

Re: LIRR riders that live in: Greenlawn/ NP/ ENPT/ Commack/ Smithtown
As everyone else said it's the Port Jeff line.
More trains end & start in Huntington which is why most people drive to that station. If I'm going at an hour where there are regular trains & you don't have to transfer, I'd rather save the drive. Depending on who I am dropping off where, I park in Northport, Greenlawn or Huntington on any given day.
It's 1 hour 10 minutes to Huntington. 1 hour 20 minutes to Northport. I only say that because since I grew up in the area, I always said an hour to Penn. When we bought a house in the area, DH always corrected me to "It's about an hour & a 1/2, stop rounding down."
There is always parking on the SOUTH side of the tracks. North side lot is usually filled first.

Re: LIRR riders that live in: Greenlawn/ NP/ ENPT/ Commack/ Smithtown
I commute with a few people from Smithtown and they actually prefer to take the Ronkonoma line from Central Islip. Also a colleague of mine that lives in Commack also takes the Ronkonkoma line, but from Deer Park.
I live ins S. Setauket and take the train from Ronkonkoma. For me the Port Jeff line is just too slow and their schedule is just off with my needs.
I know a feew people who live in Greenlawn, NP and ENPT and they come in on the Huntington line.

when I commuted from Commack, I would drive to the Deer Park station / Ronkonkoma line. The Port Jeff line does not have a great schedule beyond Huntington, and often requires transfers.

This is what confuses me...is the drive to Deer Park shorter than the drive to Huntington? Why do you choosedeer park rather than huntington?
ETA: Ok, I just mapped it from an address of a house we are interested in Smithtown ont he commack border and it was 13 min to deer park train station as opposed to 22 m in to huntington .
THanks!
