LIRR Spouses/Employees
The thread about Social Security got me thinking about the railroad non-SS system.
Does anyone understand how it works? Is it just like SS, meaning after a certain age you get a set amount every month? What age does is start? Does any $$$ put into SS prior to the railroad come back to them, or is it just out the window now?
TIA!

Re: LIRR Spouses/Employees
My father is retired from the LIRR and my ex husband works for them now. From what I understand is that they do not pay into the SS system while working and they will get the benefits when they retire. Almost the same as SS but more money. My father started collecting at 62 but I also think it works with how many years you were with the LIRR as well. If they paid and qualified for SS before joining the rail road, I beleive they would get that money in addition to the LIRR retirement fund. It's very confusing so I would talk to a benefits person at the LIRR to get specific answers.

Thank you Karen! It's very confusing indeed, and my DH just keeps saying "don't worry, it's better than SS"
