Listening to Music?

I remember hearing that listening to certain types of music while pregnant helps the baby cognitively. For example, classical music. Has anyone been doing this??

I did that with Baby Einstein. I heard that when they were born they'd recognize the music and remember it and settle down. Let's just say...Chat Icon No that definitely did not happen. Chat Icon

Re: Listening to Music?

I just read an article where really, all this stuff does nothing for cognitive development. Nor does the baby einstein stuff when they are infants... But, it can't hurt to expose your baby to music in the womb regardless - I am a huge music lover and would put my Ipod headphones to my belly many times....

Honestly, the best thing for cognitive development is still to talk and interact with your baby!

Re: Listening to Music?

I think classical music is the best for the baby as soon as they can hear. I do believe it helps the baby

Re: Listening to Music?

Classical in stereo because of the neurons used to put it all together.

DH ripped some Mozart and Vivaldi onto my mp3 player - but ut isn't working!! I think it only really is effective while in the womb if using headphones....

Currently bidding on Baby Einstein stuff!! Chat Icon

Re: Listening to Music?

They can hear it.

The main difference between "pop" and "classical" is that pop is more "primitive" in the tempo while classical is more elaborate and requires more action from the brain since this is more complex.

I've read many times that putting headphones to your tummy is wayyyyy too loud for the baby and can actually do damage to their hearing. If you just listen to music normally (no headphones up to tummy) they will hear it, but babies can't really hear what is going on outside the womb until sometime after 17/18 weeks anyway.

I read the same thing. I had classical and all types of music playing all the time for Andrew. And I would always sing to him. Ever since he was born he has LOVED music!!! He started dancing before almost everything elseChat Icon

Re: Listening to Music?

I am a classical fan, so I play it anyway when I am cleaning, relaxing etc.... I am also from a very musical home, as is DH, so the baby has already been exposed to all varieties of music. So far my baby likes Megadeath, but also likes Beethoven.....go figureChat Icon
