Re: Little Shelter in Huntington, ny
I have adopted both my dogs from there, I would never get an animal from anywhere else.
You will be extremely impressed with their facilities, I have never seen animals, cats or dogs, more taken care of. If I was a dog or a cat in a shelter I would want to be there.
There is the "cattery" or "cat house". There are 2 doors to get in, so the cats can't sneak out. All of the adult cats (except if they are sick or handicapped) all live together, they are not in cages. The "adolescents" are in another room and the "babies" or expecting mothers are segregated in another room. It's so cool when you go in there b/c there are cats everywhere, on the washing machine, on the dryer, on the shelves. You will love it.
I don't know how much adopting a cat is, I know it has to do with how old the animal is. When I adopted my first dog, she was between 2-3 years old, it was $100. She came neutered with all her shots. WHen I got my second dog, he was an 8week old puppy, it was $275 or $300, but he also was neutered, shots and they paid for the first vet visit to their vet as well. All payments to them are tax deductible as well, they are non-profit.
They will never let you take an animal that is sick (something contagious, etc.). They are very reputable.
Get a tour of the facility, even the dogs, you will be impressed!

I remembered reading both good and bad posts about Little Shelter on the pet section of Craigslist.. I did a search for you so you could see more opinions from both sides:

Re: Little Shelter in Huntington, ny
i LOVE little shelter. We adopted our pi mix from there last year. I would never adopt from anywhere else. I went form Shelter to shelter and wound up at little shelter. My dog was 5 months old and little shelter took him from Hempstead shelter because they were going to put him down for no reason. All the dogs get a chance to run outside. they take them on walks. they are a no-kill shelter. When DH and i close on our house in February, we might go back and adopt another pit

I would be suspect of anything like these posts on craigs list. You really have no idea who is posting them or the veracity of what is being stated.
At any point in time you can go there and get a tour of the entire facility and the grounds. I have known two of their employees for over 5 years and they do not "hoard" dogs. They do allow animals that have not been adopted to become Sanctuary Animals that live their lives out at the facility.

WOW! so happy to hear you had a great experience!!
me & DH have been "foster parents" to my best friend's cat since august... she moved to long island and could not keep her cat until she found her own place... so we took him in... i didnt think how hard it would have to be to give him back!!! we got SOOO attached to him! so we decided to adopt our own cat & my mom told me about little shelter and i almost died when i saw all the cats on the site!!!

Re: Little Shelter in Huntington, ny **UPDATE**
Labs are awesome. <------- I'm a little partial
I hope you're ready for energy! How old is the puppy, do they think? We got ours at 9 months and although we don't have much trouble keeping him in line, they can really be a handful.
But the love, devotion and loyalty... there's nothing like it. Congratulations.

Re: Little Shelter in Huntington, ny **UPDATE**
just to for warn you, they are VERRRRY thorough with the application process which is fantastic! i know they wanted to do a home evaluation for us (we ended up finding a dog at the town shelter in huntington that our 1st dog liked better) and it takes a few days. that's one thing i do love about them is that they don't let just anyone adopt their dogs and they take in dogs that will never get adopted. they're amazing. good luck and hope to see some pictures of the puppy!!

FWIW, I've done it both ways... and it's much easier to get the dog first and then the cat...

If they have a litter and you are interested in one of the pups, they will usually let you pick one and reserve it for you until he or she is ready to be releaesd from Little Shelter.
