Livid ... Would you switch docs?
Hi. This is my second pregnancy. My previous OB/GYN office split up and I moved over to the new office.
When I went for my initial visit at the new office, I told the doc that I could not tolerate prenatal vitamins, had a bad reaction and was instructed during my first pregnancy to take Flinstones throughout. He said, "they are much better now" and gave me a sample and a script.
I tried it and developed a SEVERE allergy ... we're talking full body hives, blown up eyes, fever ... the works. The reaction is not what I'm mad at. What I'm mad at is that when I called the OB office, they said take Benedryl and call back if its no better. That was Friday. I called back later in the day and was told there were no doctors and to call my internist.
I saw my internist on Saturday, who told me to take Zyrtec once a day. So now it's Saturday night, the hives have gotten even worse and I don't know if I can/should take anything else. My husband tries a 24 hour pharmacist, who refuses to answer questions due to fear of liability. I call the OB back and left a message. He calls back, was extremely short with me, and said something to the effect of allergy issues are for the internist and to follow up with him.
I'm sorry ... but if YOUR OFFICE gave me a pill that gives me an allergic reaction, how is that NOT your problem to deal with? Does someone really need to go to an emergency room to find out if they can take a Benadryl and a Zyrtec in the same 24 hour period during the first trimester?
Would you switch OB's because of this? Because my husband and I are absolutely livid.

ABSOLUTELY I would switch. I'm sorry, but if that was me and I had a bad allergic reaction to something my OB prescribed, you can bet your booty they'd see my right away to make sure everything was alright. I hope you feel better. And not for nothing, many times, internists don't really know what can be taken during pregnancy, and they will only defer you back to your OB. When I was pregnant, even for ear infections and other sickness, my OB treated me. She gave me a general check up every time I went. Feel better

I would ABSOLUTELY switch. I was never in this exact situation but, if I had been, I would expect VERY VERY different treatment! I am SO sorry you are going through this!

I completely agree!! Whenever I had other problems, it was always done by my OB. They know what is safe. Even in the weeks after giving birth when I was BF, my OB and pediatrician actually called each other to discuss a course of action. They wanted to make sure that everything was safe for me and the baby.

Re: Livid ... Would you switch docs?
Thank you ladies, and I realize I was so out of it that I posted on the wrong board. For those of you who are or were happy w/ your Ob's, would you mind recommending? The fact that my Mother's Day is shot is making me even angrier. I had to cancel my BBQ and tell everyone not to come.

I would switch docs.
I can recommend mine -- her name is Tracy Vo and her office is in Fresh Meadows, Queens. She's very busy but also very professional.

Re: Livid ... Would you switch docs?
not to mention the bad judgement.......
you try the vitamins, you have the exact same reaction, and they ask you to take benadryl? so, you should fight the allergy and be on benedryl your entire pregnancy? yeah, that's MUCH better for the baby than taking flinstones vitamins...
sorry you went through that... at least you found out their true colors early on, and can switch well before you enter labor..... ps- you DID stop taking them, right? If it were me, I'd go back to flinstones while looking for another OB....

ITA!!! How are you going to trust this OB with your and baby's health now?! I know I couldn't. Also as Rachel mentione, many internist is super cautious about pregnant women, they will just refer you back to you OB. I had a nasty cold during my pregnancy, saw my PP, she still had to speak to my OB in order to properly treat me.
I hope you feel better soon
