Living and working in Canada with no cell phone
Curious if anyone can help me. DH and I recently moved to Toronto. We are unable to open up any new accounts here in Canada because we have no SIN (the Canadian equivalent of an SSN). This means we cannot open a Canadian credit card, which we would need to qualify for a wireless account here in Canada. As of right now we can't make any calls or use the internet on our cell phones because we would be roaming. So we're stuck. I don't even know where to turn. We have passports and work permits but as US Citizens we cannot get an SIN. If anyone knows anything about opening up an account in a country other than one where you are a citizen... please let me know. Thanks

I have a friend in NS I will ask her. Her hubby is American, she may have an idea.
Another place you may want to try is creditboards.com's forums, there may be someone there who has had a similar experience

Verizon Wireless offers a "Nationwide Plus Canada" plan.
Or upgrade your US accounts to international?

That's if you live in the US - not if you live in Canada and are calling the US. We have called already and spoken to several supervisors

Re: Living and working in Canada with no cell phone
OK my friend said your DH's employer should probably be helping you with that type of stuff but other than that her DH became a permanent resident before he opened anything.
Sorry can't be more help.
Do they do any type of prepaid plans up there?

They do, but that means buying a very expensive unlocked phone

Aw that sucks. Sorry. What about a pre-paid? I know Canada isn't as big of a cell phone culture as US but you'd think there would be SOMETHING for you guys.
