long ear dogs
my beagle seems to get ear redness/infections every so often. the vet says it happens with floppy ear dogs. Each time she gets one it sets me back $150 plus.
anyone have any tips to avoid this or anything I can put in her ears that doesn't require a prescription? tia

Re: long ear dogs
i bought ear drops from PETCO to clean out hershey's ears once a week... i think it will also help clear up an infection if there is one in there
he just went to the vet a couple weeks ago and she commented on how clean his ears look! lol

Re: long ear dogs
How often do you clean them and what do you use? Unless there's a larger underlying problem, it could simply be a case of doing it more often and making sure they are dry when you're done.

i use the wash that the dr sold me when she had her infection. its very hard to wash her ears she gets very mad and i have to put a muzzle on her . how many times do you recommend washing per week.

Re: long ear dogs
I use an all natural ear cleaner and clean my dog's ears as needed. I would suggest for you right now to possibly use a medicated ear cleaner or a 50/50 solution of alcohol and peroxide. I think you should use it frequently like every other day or so for a while until the infections stop and then keep a regular routine of maybe every two or three days. If your dog is prone to them it is something you will always want to prevent instead of treat later. Also make sure if your dog is out in the rain, snow, or has a bath the inside of his ears are always completely dried out immediately. Sometimes when my dog is sitting on my lap on the couch I will flip his ear over so the air can circulate through...even if just for a few minutes.

Re: long ear dogs
i use ear wipes and clean them every 3 days. Sometimes your dog can gets ear infections because they're allergic to their food.

Re: long ear dogs
Yup, what they said!
My dogs get yeast ear infections, and there are a ton of reasons for them. I was cleaning Brinkley's ears every day for a while, then once they were healthy, I backed off little by little. We're up to 2-3 weeks now and they're squeaky clean.
Ginger... is seeing the vet today at 5:15 about her ears. They thought she had the beginnings of an infection and told me to clean them every other day to see if that would help. It didn't. Every other day, yucky brown smudges and black semi-solid pieces come out. Terrible.
By the way, once the ears are healthy, your dog might be a lot better about you cleaning them. Once they're infected and swollen, it hurts them much more for you to clean them. If they're healthy and you treat him with something really great when you're done, he'll be more apt to sit nicely for you.
I have used all natural products, ones from Best Friends animal society, but the one that works best for us so far is T8 Keto. I got it from my vets office and it's expensive ($35 for a 12 oz bottle) but I don't care because it works. I use the cotton rounds that you can get from the pharmacy that women use to remove their makeup. Soak the round, put it as far in as I can go, move it all around, and repeat until the canal and all the folds in the ear come out clean. Last, I take a dry round and dry everything up.
Sorry for rambling, but it's a really big problem for some dogs so I thought it would be good to put it all down for you.

Re: long ear dogs
I just check my dog's ears very often and I find that if I keep up on them he rarely gets infections. I would just clean them a lot but I find that has lead to irritation and then infection. I seem to have developed a good instinct for when he needs them cleaned and when to leave them alone. He has gotten ear mites and I learned that just a small amount of baby oil will literally drown the mites and they die off. Plus it is soothing to the dog.
