Long! Help! Paint Type and Color Help
I will start by saying that we live in Central CT.
We have a raised ranch and the living room opens to the kitchen. We painted the living room (along with the entrance/foyer and hallway) a sage green color and it looks nice with the maple wood floor/windows/trim. I believe we went with a flat or maybe eggshell (very little sheen).
The kitchen is not great but decent. Anyhow, it is currently a ridiculously bright yellow and I believe it it semi gloss but it is really shiny. We would like to redo the paint in the kitchen so that it compliments the living area.
We have no interest in staying in this house but we need to make some general updates without going overboard.
We plan to keep the honey maple KraftMaid cabinets and replace the red laminate countertop with some type of stone - before we try to sell the house.
We have medium shade maple windows/doors/trim and a white popcorn ceiling (I know it would be ideal to remove the popcorn ceilings but we probably won't be tackling that project before we sell.)
Now my question is, what color and type of paint do you recommend for a kitchen? I don't want to do anything dark/bold just something that will compliment the green in the rest of the upstairs - like a nice beige/neutral. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: Long! Help! Paint Type and Color Help
For a kitchen, I would get paint in an eggshell finish atleast or make sure its a scrubbale kind of matte(like Ben Moore's Regal Matte). BM also makes special kitchen and bath paint. As for colors, you would need to decide what you want to emphasize-for instance if you paint the kitchen a green like the rest of your living space, you will end up emphasizing your red laminate as they are complementary colors. A toned down yellow will bring out the colors in your maple cabinets. But yellows are the most difficult color to get right. I would suggest you start by painting a few different samples on poster boards (atleast 1' by 1') and move them around to see what color family works well with your elements. Then you can try to narrow it to a particular shade. I am in the same process of elimination now for our basement and it is hard!

Thank you for the advice, I definitely do not want to emphasize the red laminate!! Can I get small sample sizes of BM paint?

Yes. You can get 2 oz samples for 4$ at your local BM or Ace store. They might not have all the samples there but they can mix you a pint for whatever color you choose. At our local Ace it is 6$-am not sure about the BM store. Good Luck!
