LONG night- DD has a UTI, some questions? ETA- another question

2.10 yo dd, 6 weeks toilet trained, was crying this am that it hurts when she pees. then 4 accidents today. so i took her to ped when i got home from work-appointment was at 7:30. then we had a 30 minute wait. Chat Icon
then DD spent 45 minutes wwailing and crying that she will NOT pee in a cup.Chat Icon we finally- me, 2 nurses, got her to go with multiple treats and lollies. plus i had my screaming 11 mo with me the whole time, dh not home, i thought it would be a quick pee in cup, dip urine thing. so urine dip comes back suspicious, they are culturing it overnight, started her on antibiotics anyhow. we go to drug store, they filled it under somoen elses name, they had to reenter in system JUST got home now, at 9:30, wiht 2 hysterical kids.

anyhow- we did not see our normal ped, the one that was on call tonight, who i happen to not love. some questions-
1. what does suspicous urine mean?i thought a dip is yes or no?
2. what can I do to avoid more utis? shes jsut toilet trained, she very often goes several hours without peeing, doesnt pee in school. Icant force her to go. she doesnt have accidents, but definitly holds it.
3. she is 2.10, like I said- isnt thsi a little young to get a UTI?

Re: LONG night- DD has a UTI, some questions?

First of all, many Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon for your poor DD! I actually have a little bit of experience with this, as my then 5 month old DD had a UTI last month! She ended up having to be admitted and received IV antibiotics. The docs said that girls are able to UTIs more easily than boys due to our anatomy. To answer your questions:

1. Suspicious urine, means the white cell count was high. We all have bacteria in and around our vaginas but when a UTI is suspected, the white cell count is higher than usual. The problem with this is, whether the sample was a 'clean catch' or not. My poor DD had to get a cath twice at the peds office to make sure that the urine was infected and not that it was her normal vaginal bacteria that was getting into the sample.

2. To avoid more UTIs, I am not sure. I guess talk to her about going potty more often, since it isn't good that she is holding it in; it may be a contributing factor. Also, make sure she is wiping (or you/DH are wiping) her front to back. That will keep her bum bacteria out of her vagina. Maybe encourage her to drink more water so that she has to go to the bathroom and wouldn't be able to hold it in.

3. You would think that 2 is too young to have a UTI, but as it was explained to me and evidenced by my own DD, you are never too young to get them. Chat Icon I pray that the antibiotics work fast on your DD and that she doesn't suffer from any more in the future! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

while DD was having her tantrums, ped said if she wont go ,they would catheterize her, but it was something neither ped or I wanted, since at her age DD would be completely traumatized. how can they tell if its clean or not? i wiped her, she went straight into cup. i hope.

TBH, you can't really tell if it is a 'clean catch' per se, but assuming that she has one (due to the pain with urination) and she is on antibiotics, it doesn't really matter. The microscopy will also show if there is growth, so that will confirm it. With my DDs case, she was so young, that they needed to catherize her to see if she did have a high white cell count since she would need to be hospitalized.

I just spoke to nurse at ped's office- she said the in office analysis they did was negative, but smells awful. lab culture wont be back until tomorrow. said to keep her on antibiotics for now.
if the dip was positive, in office anlysis was negative, what can it be? hwo accurate are in office?

If the infection isn't bad enough yet she won't test positive in the office. I have to literally be peeing blood for it to register in a dip test. Sorry for the tmi.
To avoid them in the future remind her to only wipe from front to back. I would also recommend either a cup of cranberry juice everyday (100% juice only no cocktail) or something like Cranactin. There is something in the cranberry that helps flush bacteria from the bladder. If I go more than a few days without my cranberry I get a uti. I have been this way most of my life.
I hope she feels better fast Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon
I've been there done that...ugh

But to answer the third question she's not too young at all.

AJ's UTI was at 8mo!!!! Chat Icon

Try to get an 8mo to pee on command! Chat Icon We spent the better part of an hour with bottles of milk and rubbing her belly. She wasn't allowed to have water at that point.

Even tho we already knew it.. it was be very sure she's very clean. It was not so easy with a baby who's in a diaper since she sat in her pee. I guess since your DD is potty training she just needs to wipe better??? (just guessing here) Of course sometimes you just 'get them' regardless of what you drink or how you pee.

The suspicious result is what we got too. Sent for over night verification.

I guess its just not completely clear yet. They told me that if its early enough it can still be very very painful but not have enough bacteria in the culture to be a dead ringer. Instead its just suspicious as it could be other things as well.

Sorry if someone has already said all this...

Hope she feels better soon!
