Elcar went blind from glaucoma a few seasons into the show, but his affliction was written into his character, and he remained on the show until the end of its run in 1992. He was 77.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005 James (Scotty) Doohan, Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise, died at his Redmond, Washington, home with his wife of 28 years, Wende, at his side. The cause of death was pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. It appears The Captain beamed up Scotty. He was 85.
