I don't like the ankle strap unless you're planning on wearing them mostly with pants. Ankle straps make 99% of people's legs look short and fat (myself included).

They do--I still wear ankle straps though (and have have short, fat legs to start with), b/c my feet fall out of shoes, but I find it is key to stick to straps that don't come too high up your ankle & and, if possible are in a color close to your skin tone. (Although I do have burgundy ones, just b/c I love them.)
