Looking for a new digital camera & video recorder!
What can you recommend? Price isn't much of an issue.

if you want an "upgrade" in terms of a camera, definitely look into digital SLR's. the quality and versitility is just amazing!
we have a Nikon digital SLR and really love it!!

I have the Canon eos 20D digital SLR and it's one of the best purchases I've made in a long time.

Re: Looking for a new digital camera & video recorder!
I just went to BestBuy to look at the Nikon D40X or D80 but the salesman there said the Canon XTI was the way to go. He seemed to know a lot about cameras - he wasn't just a kid working there on the weekends.
Anway, now I am just waiting for it to go on sale. He said early spring they go on sale for graduation/Mother's Day, etc.

I'm a Nikon fan.
Honestly pros shoot Nikon or Canon. They're both high quality brands that opffer similar product lines. It's about personal preference. The best way to choose to to try them out in the store and find out which one feels the best in your hands and which is more intuitive, which for me was Nikon. I am a Nikon gal.

Re: Looking for a new digital camera & video recorder!
are you looking for 1 device (digital camcorder that takes stills) or you looking to buy 2 seperate items...?
I would stay away from mini-dvd drives
Hard drive camcorders are great but limited to the time of recordings depending on the size...
As for cameras....if you arent a hard core photo person, you don't need a SLR.

Re: Looking for a new digital camera & video recorder!
Is it possible to get one device? I love taking photos and we're going to Europe this summer so I'd love to get a video recorder. It just seems that there is SO much great stuff out there I don't even know where to start looking!!!

Check out CNet.com they usually have a pretty comprehensive list and reviews.

I totally went in thinking Nikon. The reason this salesperson liked the Canon better was because he said it had a self-cleaning shutter. Do you clean the shutter on the Nikon? Is it a pain in the butt (I know nothing about this)? I have had 2 Canons (non-DSLR) and I am really not a fan of Canon anymore (I have just not been happy with the cameras that I've had). But he said that the self-cleaning shutter was a great plus.

I've never cleaned a shutter on any camera I've ever had. I didn't know they get dirty.
And I disagree with babyboy, I don't think you have to be a ahrdcore photo person so appreciate and use an SLR. It gets MUCH better pictures out of the box, on auto with no photo experience than a compact digi
