Looking for an oncologist referral for BRCA testing...
Can anyone recommend an oncologist for a consult? My pcp gave me a script (due to family history), but I don't know where to start looking for someone who is excellent.
Any suggestions welcome!

Perhaps you just need an appointment with a Genetic Counselor- and depending on the results, then see an oncologist. Either way, I would recommend Memorial Sloan Kettering. They have locations in Nassau and Suffolk. I believe Genetic Counselors can see you there and teleconference you with specialist in NY. Blood work can be done on LI. They know how to get authorizations, so insurance is usually not a problem. Good Samaritan does genetic tests, so I think most hospital would Message me if you have any questions- I am not BRCA positive but have had some experience with the testing. Good Luck

Looking for an oncologist referral for BRCA testing...
I just had this test done by my ob/gyn 2 weeks ago. It was done at my annual appt due to family history. I would check with your gyno first before going to an oncologist.

That’s great to hear! It has also been recommended to me that I should be tested. I wonder if my OBGYN does the testing. Definitely going to ask
What is the protocol if you test positive? Do they do more breast exams?

My dr said if it’s positive then he’ll talk to me all about preventive measures and give me a referral.

Re: Looking for an oncologist referral for BRCA testing...
I went to genetic counselor / obgyn Dr. Brian Cooperman in New Hyde Park for BRCA and all other known gene mutations. He was so calming and sweet. He made a very stressful time more tolerable. Thankfully was negative for everything but I felt comfortable with him.
I found out recently that my current obgyn in west Islip (dr John vullo) also does the myrisk testing.
So depending on where you are on the island, either dr could do the testing for you. I can only recommend seeing dr Cooperman for the testing because that’s where my experience was for this specific thing and he handled it very well for me
Best of luck.

I asked dr Cooperman what my options were if it was positive and he said the options were as little as taking tamoxifen, going on birth control to control my hormones and Yearly MRIs on my breasts. To the more extreme double mastectomy / full hysterectomy. He said at my age, he would start on the simpler side and then adjust as we went. I needed info not let’s see what the test says. I was too panicked. I needed a plan, ya know?
My 1st cousin had a full hysterectomy (she’s is in her 50’s) and is checking Her breasts with MRI every year. She is BRCA+

Your OBGYN should be able to do it right in the office with a blood test or saliva.
I tested negative but with higher risk percentage so I just go for mammos and sonos every 6 months. It's good peace of mind. Good luck!

Re: Looking for an oncologist referral for BRCA testing...
Thank you all. I think my pcp wrote a script because she felt that it may be necessary for my insurance coverage. I personally think I'd be better of seeing a geneticist like my sisters have.
I'm seeing my pcp on Monday and I'll ask more questions.
