Looking for helpful hints on making chocolate covered strawberries

I want to make some for BIL & SIL's housewarming party this weekend.

I am thinking of doing a trial run tomorrow or Friday and will be going to the store today to buy supplies

What kind of chocolate would you recommend using

Is a double broiler necessary?

Any helpful hints on what to do or NOT to do?

I'm thinking that I will set them on parchment paper in the refrigerator to cool.

Any thoughts/hints/help etc would be appreciated!!

Re: Looking for helpful hints on making chocolate covered strawberries

When I make them I always use Mercken's melting chocolate (the kind they sell at Grandma's in Wantagh -- used for making lolipops etc) but you could use chocolate chips if you can't get your hands on the other kind.

I recommend using the double boiler -- it cuts on the risk of burning the chocolate. And you don't need anything fancy --- a glass bowl over a small amount of simmering water in a pot will do you just fine.

If you do use the chocolate chips and you find that it's still a bit thick after it's melted you can add a drop or 2 of veg. oil and that will help thin it out. (shouldn't be a problem with milk or semi sweet chocolate but white is thicker than the others)

Make sure the berries are dry before you dip them.

After they're dipped place them on parchment and stick in fridge till set. I would make them as close to the party as you can. A few hours should be fine.

If you need anything else feel free to FM me!

Good luck!

we buy the stuff that's usually in the fruit section... I forgot the brand, but you just microwave it and then dip the strawberries or whatever fruit you want in there.

Yeah... we cheat so I may not be of any help. It's really good though

my mom actually taught me a trick of putting a few drops of oil in the chocolate before u melt it, to give it some shine.

I use that too... and it's 1/2 the mess in like 1/4 of the time! And still tastes good. Chat Icon
