I think Cell Phones are good for kids.. I know a lot of people may disagree but I like the idea... And if you can add GPS on it I like that part even more...

Re: looking for opinions for my son's b-day gift
Be sure there is an understanding on texting and using minutes. You want to protect yourself in case his texting/using minutes/data usage gets out of hand. Ever mom of a teen with a cell phone that I know has complained about a several hundred dollar phone bill at one point.
Also, the teenagers in my life has had at least one iPod/cell phone stolen, lost, or broken. My cousin's DD is on her second iPhone. My 17yo brother is on his umpteepth phone. He gets the insurance and they are not smartphones but the way he goes through them, my mom won't ever consider a smartphone. His iPod Nano was stolen and just recently, his iTouch that he got for Christmas was stolen within 3 weeks of him having it. If your son is not careless and takes care of his things, then I would consider it.

all are very good points!
in my son's defense... he never goes over minutes and he has never lost an ipod or phone.
