Looking for small dog recommendations....

Grandma would LOVE to have a cat but feels that a dog (a small lap dog) would fit in better around here. She lives in her own apt and the yard is fenced.

We would obviously go through a rescue or go to an animal control shelter....but we are looking for suggestions for dogs that are:

good with kids
don't shed TOO much (she doesn't mind brushing--she used to have a Maine Coon cat)
doesn't bark alot
and is affectionate/lap dog

Shih Tzu
Maltese
Chinese Crested (I always have to plug my breedChat Icon )
Havanese

The longer haired breeds can be kept in a puppy cut for easier maintenance.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise but I am going to put a plug in for Havanese... small (up to 15 pounds -my 3 range from 8 pounds to 15 pounds), nonshedding, hypoallergenic, smart, fun breed. Not to mention adorable. They used to be circus dogs and are loads of fun.

Re: Looking for small dog recommendations....

We adopted a Shorkie Tzu last september. He is just amazing with my nieces ( 6 mos and 2 yrs old), he doesn't shed, and he never barks! He's such a family dog. Very cute and cuddly, he's definitely a loveable lapdog!

So.. I recommend A mix of Yorkie/ Shitzu, or just Shitzu.

I commend you for wanting to adopt!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We have a shih tzu who fits what you are looking for perfectly! he is so loving, doesn't shed-he rarely barks-he was not terrible to train- about 2 weeks for the basics and about a month to get potty training under control...he is the greatest! Chat Icon Good with kids!

Re: Looking for small dog recommendations....

yorkie's are terriers and terriers of any sort can tend to be very yappy so if she wants one that doesn't bark a lot, she may want to steer clear of those.
i have a maltese... they are hypoallergenic so they don't shed at all; he rarely barks (though i'm sure that can vary from dog to dog); he is great with my neices and nephew.

You could try a Chihuahua (I have seen some that bark, but I think they tend to be non-yappy, they generally bark for a reason).

Re: Looking for small dog recommendations....

Shih Tzu
Maltese
Papillon
Bichon (SP?)

My number one recommendation is a Miniature Schnauzer.

They are great dogs- our dog loves to lay with us and is very affectionate. She is gentle and amazing with children- never even nips!

She is from the Terrier group so from the moment we got her we NEVER encourages barking-- Terriers are known to bark from time to time so we just made sure to discourage that and she is totally fine. We would simply shake a can of coins when she did it and after just a few days she realized and didn't do it anymore-- that was the ONLY thing we had to put effort into... and it was pretty easy.

They are VERY obedient and owner pleasing.

They also don't shed at all and are hypoallergenic.

I cannot recommend them enough! Great companions- wonderful dogs.

Cute too Chat Icon

I would recommend females- they are smaller than males but both have great temperments.

Char is, full grown, 12 pounds Chat Icon
