I was reading that you have to get sponsored by a licensed real estate broker. You will not be allowed to take the New York real-estate agent test if you are not.
You do not have to work for the broker who sponsors you, even though your license will come in his name. You can go to another broker and the license will be transferred over
.( is this true??)
Also where can I go to take the required agents classes?

Re: looking to become a real estate agent in ny

Hi Selden!
I just became a new vendor on lifamilies.com! My business is www.cupcakescatering.com, but I also happen to be a Real Estate agent with RE/MAX, so hopefully I can assist you with this question.
The word "sponsored" doesn't have a accurate translation here. Essentially, every NYS real estate salesperson (you cannot become a "broker" for at least 2 years after becoming a "real estate salesperson") must work under a broker's license, i.e. RE/MAX, Century 21, Prudential etc. in order to operate. They do this so that your broker holds liability for you, your license and your actions. You can transfer your license from any broker at any time, but you will probably want to give some thought to which office you want to join before taking the exam, and then stick with them. Look for offices/companies with strong training programs since you are going to be a new agent.
Check out www.nyrei.com for classes.
I hope that helps. FM if you have any other questions. Chat Icon AND...check out www.cupcakescatering.com!!
Best of luck!
Lauren
