What do you plan to do with it? Just word processing, spreadsheets, etc? Games? Store photos? Edit videos? Carry it around a lot? These all drastically change what kind of laptop you should get.

In that case, I would focus on the weight as the primary factor. Any new computer will have more than enough power to run Office utilities and surf the web for many years. A big hard drive is good, but you could always get an external USB drive to keep home for the bulk of your photos, and just keep some on the actual laptop. I'll see if I can find some good recommendations for a lightweight laptop. Is there a maximum you want to spend?

CNET link for laptops between 4-6 lbs, and $1200-$1400 and 64GB hard drive or more
PC Magazine list of Business laptops under $1500
If you want to stick with Dell, the Dell XPS M1330 is under $1500, lightweight, and will do everything you need a laptop to do.

Re: Looking to buy a new computer......
ummm...1500 for what you want to do is way tooo much...for that price, you can buy 2
1lb difference in laptops don't make a huge difference... You will have a major difference in weight if you were to go for an ultra compact models like 12 inch screens vs 17 inch monsters...
Keep components for what you need is intel dual core 2 processers (don't buy moblie intels, they are garbage) or amd 64x2 procossers and i would get 2 gigs of memory (at least 1 gig) with vista home preimum. No user on an avg bases comes close to filling a Hard Drive so 80 gig, 160 gig (which is pretty standard) would do.
Dell offers great models. If you are intrested, i can recommend a few also. But for 1500, buy me 1 too
