Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
In our school, the kids rent them. The parents are often hesistant to purchase one if the child is just starting. We send our kids to Ninows or Family Melody Center.

Our school always recommends renting from Cornet Music in Smithtown

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
I highly recommend Farmingdale Music Center on Main Street. I used a Selmer Sax, but Yamaha is good for a beginner too.
Sam Ash also has a big selection, but they tend to be pricey.

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
Definitely rent one first. Get a student model and depending on his size he may want to consider an alto sax or a tenor. Musicland is a great place to start as well as some of the others.
Don't buy until you are sure he will continue on and he likes it.

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
What I just learned was the school district sometimes rents them. I had a baritone sax on hold at Coronet (for a cost of $350 for the year), when my daughter's music teacher called me to tell me I could rent it through the district for $50.

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
I used to play the flute, and at first, I rented one from Cornet Music in Smithtown. After about two years of playing it, my mom finally bought me one. Your son might not like the saxophone, and he might want to try something else. I would rent!

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
Is there a reason your want to buy one for your son? I am a music teacher and I always suggest renting one the first year to make sure your child likes the instrument. If you do choose to buy one, however, please DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT buy one from Target, Costco, BJs, etc. Any instrument made in China is going to fall apart and be a piece of, well, you know what. You can look for Selmer, Yamaha, Armstrong, etc. All the main instrument brands have a line of saxophones. You're looking at 450-500 dollars for a decent student sax to buy and about 120 to rent for a year.

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
I just bought my daughter a clarinet this summer after her first year of playing. She really took off with it and loves it (and she is really good too)! I spent $120 to rent one last year that was a total piece of garbage and couldn't see spending another $120 on renting one again. I lucked out and found one on Criagslist of all places - it was an $800 clarinet that I got for $400 (and wood too)! The man bought it (he was a professional musician) as a spare and only used it a handful of times. He was moving and just looking to unload it. I took it to Sam Ash and had the whole thing checked out and they said I got a good bargain.
Hunt around - check Craigslist, Ebay, Family Melody, etc.

Re: looking to buy saxophone .........
I played clarinet from 4th to 12th grade. My mom rented it for the first year, then after she knew I liked it, she bought me one. But definitly make sure they will stick with it.
I think I had to promise my mom to practice every day if she bought mine, otherwise I owed her a $1 for every time I didn't. I leared after about 5 times that I should practice after owing $5.

Thanks for your response, my son plays the baritone in band and was looking to learn to play the saxophone, i wanted to buy him a sax thinking they did not cost much...well i was wrong!!! I am now looking into renting one where do you recommend your students to go?
