Looping
Just curious if this the norm now. DD will be going from K to 1 in September. We just got a letter that she will have the same teacher and class next year. I'm thrilled--she gets very anxious in new situations so I know it will be great for her.
Does anyone else's school do this with regular classes?

Never heard of that in public school. I don't think I would be happy with that though. But then again I haven't liked my kids Grade school teachers enough to want them two years in a row ha

My first reaction was ugh, lol. It's not that I don't like her but we are just so different. IMO she gives too much HW. I figured the HW would be good practice for first grade and was hoping for less next year. Guess that's not going to happen. I can see where the consistency would benefit my DD though and she's thrilled about it.

I wouldn't care for that either as I think it is good for the kids to meet new kids and have a class with mostly different students and a new teacher.

I actually did this one year as an ICT teacher. The general education teacher and I moved up with our class. I really enjoyed it and I feel we were able to meet the needs of our students quicker than if we had a new class. We already knew the kids personalities and their academic, emotional and behavioral needs. My school would only allow looping once. The following year we were not allowed to move up with them. Even though we really wanted too. It was like we were a big family.

I have done it as a teacher too and I felt it was great because my kids knew me in the second year and we didn't need to spend a lot of time going over routines, etc.
As a mom, I like the idea but also consider the teacher and kids. Last year in first DD was in an amazing inclusion class with 2 teachers and 2 aides, all great, and the kids had such a nice rapport with each other so I would have been thrilled for them to all stay together. This year, I liked DD's teacher a lot but her class did not have that nice mix iof kids from last year.

I'm trying to figure out how it works. It doesn't appear that all the K classes do it. I think maybe they do take into consideration the teachers and the children. My DD did it from first to second. Her teacher was awesome and DD did well in 2nd grade. The only downside is that DD never really connected with any of the kids in her first grade class - she got along with everyone and didn't complain too much but she only requested play dates with the friends she had made in kinder who were not in her first or second grade classes. So that was a downside. She didn't get to form new friendships during 2nd grade. Now she is 3rd and I can see that the mix of kids is better for her this year - she had made new friendships. So I think it it were offered again I would take a closer look at the kids in my childs class and see if the mix was good for her.

Ive never done it, prob never will and I personally dont like it I think kids should be mixed up and not with same kids (the majority are the same) and should experience different teachers.
Im sure if you wanted you could ask to change your daughter

In nyc its teacher choice when we fill out our preferences for where we want to teach you can choose to loop

I went to school in another country and they do this for ALL classes 1-3.
So for three years, you are with the same kids and the same teacher. In 4th grade, you start moving around form class to class by subject and you get a new "homeroom" teacher each year.
I loved it. It was nice to know the kids and the teacher. It made learning easier because we all got used to school together and knew how to work together. I even invited my teacher to my 7th birthday party! she came and was very nice about it.
If you don't like the teacher, I can see why that would upset you though.

I can see why some wouldn't like it. We're looking forward it. I just had no clue they do this. I would love if she was able keep the same teacher for 2nd too. I think they just do 2 yrs though.

My DS 2nd grade teacher moved up to 3rd grade this year. Thank god he didn't have her two years in a row. I would have requested/begged for a change if they had saddled him with her again.

Yes my school does looping sometimes. I loopedbonce from 3rd to 4th. If your DC likes the teacher and you do also it is a good thing. The teacher will know your child very well.
