Los Cabos or Punta Cana
Found good deals in both locations. The hotel in DR seems like it might be nicer, but it is brand new so there aren't too many reviews yet.
In Los Cabos, I think, we will be able to leave the resort on our own for shopping, bars, etc. I know that isn't too safe in the DR.
Any opinions?
TIA!!

I haven't been to the DR, but I LOVED Los Cabos. So I would vote for that.

Re: Los Cabos or Punta Cana
I've only been to Punta Cana so I can only tell you my views on that. My friend has gone to Los Cabos several times and loves it.
Punta Cana is tourist central down in the DR. We went there for our honeymoon. You can do many tours there, but we never left on our own.
I prefered my first visit there. We went to a town called Cabarete. It is on the north side of the island. It has many resorts and is near a different airport (I think there are three different airports). It is a great tourist area called Sosua that DH and I went to. We took a cab there, but a scooter back (yes, three of us on a scooter. DH, me and the driver, but I saw families of 7-8 doing it too, car seats and all). It was such a laid back feel, just like Punta Cana, but not so many tourists. This was a few years back and has become more well known. I would definetely go back there. I went out on my own in the town twice and had no issues, didn't think twice about it. I wouldn't do that in Punta Cana.
My parents go once a year to Punta Cana for 3 weeks at a time. They love it. They never leave the beach or the liquor.

We are going to Punta Cana in 13 days, it will be our third trip there in three years, I can't say enough about it
Which resorts did you get your deals at?

Los Cabos would be the Melia Cabo Real (not a deal though, I think just regular pricing)
Punta Cana would be the Majestic Elegance- which is right next to the Majestic Colonial- same owners. And the Majestic Colonial is the #1 resort in Punta Cana according to Trip Advisor. The Elegance just opened this past fall so they have grand opening rates. We would have a better room here.

Re: Los Cabos or Punta Cana
We went to Los Cabos on our honeymoon and LOVED it!!!! We can't way to go back. Yes, you absolutely can leave the resort and go into Cabo San Lucas and San Jose to go out/shopping/restaurants/bars, etc. Cabo San Lucas is more touristy, San Jose is more authentic and has FANTASTIC restaurants. Have fun!!

Re: Los Cabos or Punta Cana
We have been to both Punta Cana(just went in October) and Cabo (went in 2004, got engaged there!)
Lemme first say both are great. Cabo is great because you get to leave the resort more, but if you aren't downtown, where there are few hotels, it's a hike to get down there. My BIG problem with Cabo is all the Mexicans selling every damn thing you can think of! They are selling blankets, bracelets, hats, sunglasses.....all this while you are trying to relax on the beach.....big pitfall for me. THe food was great though, went to Sammy Hagar's bar, very cool, went fishing and caught dorado (mahi mahi) and brought it to a restaurant for them to cook for us. Loved Lorenzillo's lobster restaruant too!!!!
Punta Cana is a great vacation for a person like me who has no desire to leave the resort. We stayed at the Excellence and had a FABULOUS time. Everything we needed was there, great food, drinks, nightly entertainment, gym.....We left the resort once to go ziplining and had so much fun! I would not recommend leaving the resort for much else, didn't seems very safe there.
So, with that, if I had to go back to only one place, it would be tough, but for me, I wold probably go back to Punta cana and do the all0inclusive again........
ETA Forgot to add that I was sick as a dog in Mexico, likely from the water. Had to get a prescription when I got home.

Re: Los Cabos or Punta Cana
Cabo is so much fun. You can leave the resort to shop and for the nightlife. Depending where you stay you can not go on some of the beaches bc the water is rough/rocky. Here I stayed at the Riu. Loved it.
The DR is amazing, beautiful beaches but cannot go outside of the resort unless on a tour. The resorts offer a lot to do at night. I stayed at the paradisus punta cana.
I went to both and would go back to both. It just depends what you like.
FM me if you have any questions.

Re: Los Cabos or Punta Cana
Punta Cana has nicer ocean/beaches, also the ocean is much calmer there... when we went to Cabo San Lucas I havent swam in the ocean once because the water was so rough!
