Losing a Pet

Yesterday we had to put one of our family dogs to sleep. Im devestated.

I had a class after work, I car pool with someone and she was to present a project. I found out that my dog needed to be put to sleep when I arrived. I was a mess. My teachers were real jerks and were giving her a hard time about leaving. I could have left but i would have then been leaving my friend stranded in queens. I made the choice to tell my dad to just have it done. Soon after the teachers said we could leave, I guess they felt bad for me. im so PO.

Now i just cant get over the fact that I didnt get to say goodbye. I know I would have still been sad but I dont think I would be this bad. When my grandparents passed, I went in and said goodbye, it was my closure. I dont have closure. I miss him!

Anyone else feel like this?

this was my Casper

Re: Losing a Pet

I am so sorry for your loss.

I was in a similar situation years ago. My cat had to be put down and I "had" to go to work that day, so my parents (it was our cat) were taking her.

I never forgive myself for not going with her....just b/c of a job. I learned from that experience I will NEVER put a job before anything that involves the loves of my life, family, pets, child, etc. Never. I never forgave myself, and still regret it. So I can relate.
But I guess it's all easier said than done after the fact...when you really can't afford to lose your job....

Thank you for replying.

It was such a bad situation. My father and my sister were there with Casper. My dad just couldnt bring him home and then bring him back the next day to have it done. It would haved killed us all to do that. we never would have done it.

I just wish my teachers would have been more understanding since they have known since day one that this girl and I come together. some people are so heartless. So instead of stranding my friend there i had to make a choice and sadly my brother and I couldnt say goodbye

Just like you said, I will always regret it! I makes me so mad becaues im never like that but i just didnt know what to do in this situation.

Re: Losing a Pet

Don't have regrets that you couldn't be there. It is a really difficult thing to do, put a loved pet down. I put my cat down 3 years ago so I know what it feels like. I still feel guilty for having to make the decision, but he was so sick and would not get any better.

Just remember that you loved Casper and he felt the same way about you. Chat Icon

I am so sorry for your loss. He was such a beauty. Try not to dwell on the fact that you weren't there...just remember that he was suffering and you all did the most humane thing you could for him. Re: Losing a Pet

I'm so sorry.... it is very traumatic and I can see how you could feel like you didn't get your goodbye with your beloved pet but you can still say a goodbye. I did this when I had to euthanized my cat of 12 years. I could not go into the room when she was euthanized. Even though it was my cat for many years before I met my husband, I couldn't do it and sat in the waiting room crying like a baby with my son (he was a baby at the time) sitting in the stroller looking at me strangely. I felt bad after but I read somewhere to make a list of 10 good things about your pet. I typed it up and read it aloud to my DH. I was really emotional but it helped a lot - some of it was "silly" personal things like how she use to like to sit in the bathtub after I took a shower but it was about her and it really helped me connect and say goodbye. Re: Losing a Pet

I'm sorry for your loss. Capser was a beautiful dog. Growing up I lost 2 dogs and I didn't get the chace to say good bye to either of them. The first one I was only 10 and my parents thought it was best I find out after the fact but, even at 10 I was devestated. My 2nd one was unexpected and that one destroyed my world for about 2 months. I came home from work one day and when she didn't greet me at the door, I asked where she was. My dad was sitting in his chair and I could tell something was wrong and he told me she had a tumor and it burst. He took her in but, she died there.

I still cry about that day when I think about it now. I'm sorry that you weren't able to be there. Just know that Casper knew that you loved him.

A few weeks ago I posted on here about loosing my little bunny rabbit while away on vacation. I too didn't get to say goodbye and my heart just ached. However, now that some time has passed (not a lot of time, i'm still utterly heartbroken and devastated) I have a little more perspective, and it may have been for the best that we didn't see our beloved pets at the final hour. We should remember them as they were, happy, beautiful creatures who brought us joy.

Shame on those teachers, but what goes around comes around.

ETA: I had a ferret that my parents put down while I was at work, I wish I had left to say goodbye. What I did do that made me feel a little better as far as closure was I made the marker for his grave.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You were obviously there for Casper throughout his life, when it mattered, and now he's with you always. Hang in there, so so sorry.
