Losing seniority when moving to Long Island
Hi ladies, I'm a long-time lurker on this board (I post a lot on LIWeddings) and you always have such helpful advice, so I thought this was the place to ask.
I just got a job today teaching in Long Island (yay!). I've taught in Brooklyn for 6 years. But when the woman in personnel was going over my salary, instead of starting me at step 7, where I'd be in NYC, she put me at step 4. Why? She told me straightforward: "to save money."
Can they do this? Can they pay me less than I'm worth just because they feel like it? How is that fair? I'm SOOOO excited about my new job, but it's a bit of a buzzkill thinking that they're trying to mess with me before I even start my first day. Please let me know if this is normal. Thanks so much!

totally normal!!! I don't know of anyone who moved laterally from district to district - they always shave off a few years.

That's criminal! I can't believe that they can just disregard years of teaching experience.
But it's good to know the district doesn't have anything against me personally.

Hi Jo!
The job is in Farmingdale. I've only ever taught in inner-city NYC before, so it'll be a real change.

It is totally normal, unless you are in a very high-demand position. For example, I was in my second year when I changed districts and they gave me step 2 to start at, instead of 1. I thought they would do 1. My first district actually had a step 0!!! That's what I started at!!
Congrats on the job!!!

Re: Losing seniority when moving to Long Island
Honestly, in this market you are lucky they started you at step 4. They do not have to give any steps for prior years... just a courtesy and everyone is different. I go no credit for three years of Catholic school and put in very long hours including weekends at that job.
Think of it this way... you will make it up very shortly and I'm sure there are many other benefits.
Good luck in the new school.

Re: Losing seniority when moving to Long Island
I went from step 5 in the city to step 1 in long island. It was still a 15,000 dollar raise! I didn't fight it at that point!

Well, that's the problem... I'm not making any more money at all with the move! I was budgeting for a $5000 raise, and I think I'm making a little less next year in L.I. than I would in NYC. Isn't that nuts?

W/ all the competition to get a LI job, I wouldn't worry so much about the salary...there's been girls on the boards that went from years of teaching in NYC to either TA positions or subs on LI at half the pay JUST to get a foot in the door.
I'm hoping for a catholic school job on LI & I'd too be taking a 4-5k paycut, but to me its worth it to not have an hour & a half commute & just be on the island.

Re: Losing seniority when moving to Long Island
I wouldn't be too worried. If you are going to be making about the same as you did in NYC then it sounds like they came close to matching your current salary to a step on their scale. Since there wasn't an exact match, they went for the closest lower step. Enjoy your new district, don't worry too much about the pay...you will get your percentage raises and you will do blocks of credits for raises too. Congrats!

Re: Losing seniority when moving to Long Island
I switched districts on Long Island and lost two years, but the money was still more and I was still in the retirement system.
