Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
I just lost a large filling in one of my rear molars and chipped a piece of the tooth off.... I hate the dentist and DH just got new dental insurance that I know nothing about.
I know we can go to the dentist but usually need an ok from our OB. I heard I can have novacaine without lidocaine but it will be more painful. Anyone had dental work done while pregnant? How bad was it?

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
ME! I had a root canal and two fillings...and I'm not done yet. The dentist still needs to fill the root canal.
I talked to my OB and dentist--they both told me the Novocaine-as is-is fine because it's local and not in the blood stream. The one who did the root canal used something different than Novocaine--basically it just didn't have ephedrine. I didn't notice a difference--I still felt nothing!
I just went to the dentist yesterday for a filling and he used Novocaine. I'm sure you'll be fine whatever he uses--just think of it as pain training for labor

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
I think something like that happened to me. The last few days food has been getting stuck between two of my molars. One has a white filling the other silver. I think part of the white chipped off. I don't think anything cracked. It only hurts after I eat when things get stuck. Let me know what you find out. I live OOS now & don't have a dentist here. I am trying to wait a week until we will be in NY & I can see my dentist then. We don't have dental more than cleanings on DH's new insurance. Any idea what something like this costs out of pocket? I also refuse any pain meds at all. I don't even take tylenol now so it is not going to happen. I will get whatever needs to be done without, or see if she can fix it with something temporary. Good luck!

Thanks! It doesn't really hurt because luckily the tooth was already root canalled when they did the original filling (it was a large one, almost a crown). I have already been through labor this is DC #2 but the dentist still scares the poop out of me..

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
I had a filling replaced a month ago without novicaine. It didn't hurt, but it wasn't enjoyable either. There was a second or two that was bad but it was literally just 2 seconds, I promise!
I go to the dentist at least twice during when I'm pregnant because you're more suseptible to problems during that time... and I've never had to get an okay from my OB.

I guess every dentist is different, I went for a cleaning when pregnant with Kayla and they needed something from my OB to say it was ok to do work if needed and what they couldn't do.
Glad to hear it wasn't bad without the novacaine.

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
Funny I just read this post, because I literally walked in from the dentist a little while ago. I woke up at 3am this morning in near tears from a bad toothache. I had a root canal (partial) done 2 months ago, and now he told me the tooth needs to come ASAP. So, I'm scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:30. I want to cry! My ob said yes to novacaine, as long as it doesn't have epenefrine, which the oral surgeon has. No problems there! Wish me luck :)

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
My OB said NO to Novacaine and yes to Lidocaine. (sp?) She said that Lidocaine is completely safe, but not Novacaine.

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
I had a root canal a couple of months ago. They used something just like novacaine, but I was told it does not have the long lasting effects of novacaine. But I did not feel a thing.

I've been going to my dentist my entire life. He's old school!
I tell him I'm pregnant, he doesn't do x-rays or offer novacaine. That's about it.
He doesn't have a COMPUTER in his office! His wife still writes down all his appointments in her book, all correspondence is hand-addressed and they have nifty wood-paneling in their waiting room.

Re: Lost a filing and chipped the tooth
i've had 3 filings and 1 root canal so far. the regualr novacaine doesn't feel any different than the one with epinephrine. the only thing it may wear off sooner, but i didn't find that to be the case even during the root canal my dentist was able to get my numb enough so i didn't feel a thing. good luck!!!
