Low carb runners question?
I am fit, but 35 and trying to reduce my overall carb intake. However, I like to run. What do you eat before running if you follow low carb?
Usually, before running I don't eat anything because I run at 5 in the morning. However, last night I ran the cow harbor training run in the evening and had no clue what to eat beforehand. I feel like I need the carbs for energy, so I'm looking for something to get me through these runs.

Low carb runners question?
what type of carbs do you normally eat (throughout a regular day)? what type of carbs are you looking to reduce?
i have had issues with my weight my entire life (i'm 40). i have found that i NEED carbs for my overall health. i've moved towards less processed carbs and to slower burning carbs.
i've also found to be a bit sensitive in the tummy when it comes to running. i prefer to run in the mornings than in the evenings because i have a smaller chance of eating something i shouldn't...
that being said, * before a "short" run, i'll eat fruit and or a hammer nutrition pre-workout bar and water * before a "long" run, i'll eat a small bowl of oatmeal with dried fruits and almonds
* i've also toyed with pinole, chia seeds, maca... still working on it, though
* finally, i've heard a lot of people have success with smoothies: fuits and green leafy vegetables
hope that helps

Re: Low carb runners question?
I'd love to hear sponses. I don't eat much pasta or bread at all, but my diet is a lot of quinoa, fruits, & veggies.
But daily my diet is around 60-70% carb (started tracking with myfitnesspal since training started) So I'm hoping my fuel stores will be high enough for long runs. I'm at 7miles now, & I think I need to start experimenting mid-run with some fuel. Not sure what though.
I often have just a banana if it's an very early run. Otherwise I have oatmeal with dried fruit, might add some nuts for LR days.

Re: Low carb runners question?
I dont really eat low carb but with the carbs I do consume, I try to make the healthiest choices. I dont eat much before longer runs because my stomach tends to bother me but I will usually eat a banana or a slice of toast whole grain toast with peanut butter

Re: Low carb runners question?
I do the CHTR as well. As with the State Park Monday races i try to eat around 3PM. Usually a turkey or hummus sandwich...I do a wrap, but you could sub lettuce for the wrap.
If it's morning, i don't really eat much.
Are you opposed to sports drinks/gels/etc?

Re: Low carb runners question?
I def do not like any of the sports drinks/goos etc. I try not to really eat bread because after having two kids I notice it goes straight to my stomach. I'll try having a sandwich with lettuce as the bread though. That's a great idea.
