Can you share your emergency sub plans? The kind for when you don't have time to write sub plans because you TOTALLY didn't expect to be out. Just ideas?

Re: Lower grade teachers

Hi. Im a kindergarten teachers and I have a sub folder that I leave out on my desk. It has a typed schedule to let the sub know when snack, center time, and lunch/ recess is and a class list. I leave some activities in the folder that can be done at anytime...like some alphabet pages, simple math pages, and seasonal activities. I change them every so often so that its not simple September work in the folder and I take a sick day in January. I know that some teachers just rely on their plan book as enough for a sub...that really is what it's for. But, my plan book is never accurate. Im always a day behind or ahead. With the lower grades its hard to always stay on track.

My school requires that we hand in 3 emergency sub plans at the beginning of the school year (they were due 2 weeks ago) that include an entire day's worth of work. This way they have plans in case you are out -- and then you replace them as necessary throughout the school year.

same here. I teach 7th grade, so the easiest thing is just to give textbook work. Usually quarterly I update it so the info isn't too stale, but with the state assessments, it's always good to go back to old stuff. If you give a ditto, you have to worry about it being copied, where the copies end up, do you have enough, etc . . .

I get Weekly Reader for my kids and I never get to all of them so I leave a generic topic edition in case of an unexpected accident. This keeps the class engaged for a while. I also leave some "busy work" review sheets (math, some ELA skill like ABC order). I do centers in my class so they can either follow the workboard or have free choice centers. I also usually just have the sub read a book of their choice aloud and the kids write a reading response.
